Job Description

Essential Elements

The job of Educational Sign Language Interpreter III is done for the purposes of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for assisting in the instruction or supervision of hearing impaired students, providing voice to sign and sign to voice support, and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with hearing impaired persons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate classroom information between the teacher, the deaf student, and other hearing students according to the language level of the student and the goals of the students IEP.
  • Provide communication facilitation between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and others in the general education classroom and for other school-related activities, including extracurricular activities, as designated in the students IEP.
  • Promote meeting state-approved or state-recognized requirements for certification, licensing, and registration or other comparable requirements.
  • This job reports to an Assigned Administrator/Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Adapts classroom work, homework, and assessment instruments under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce lesson plans to assigned students.
  • Administers subject-specific tests and skill assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher or resource teacher for the purpose of evaluating students language ability and subject proficiency.
  • Assesses classroom assembly, hall, and other room setups for hearing impaired students, e.g., noise level, visibility, etc., for the purpose of ensuring proper setup to facilitate hearing impaired students learning.
  • Attends Individual Education Program meetings with assigned students when appropriate for the purpose of providing necessary input into the evaluation of students progress and/or implementing/modifying students objectives through the conversion to American Sign Language (ASL) or other appropriate manual communication to facilitate student learning.
  • Confers with teachers, e.g., reviews and assesses instructional materials, goals, lesson plans, IEPs, vocabulary, discourse, content, concepts, etc., for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and/or implementing student objectives.
  • Instructs students, individual or small groups, e.g., reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc., for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring students success by the conversion of language to ASL or other appropriate manual communication to facilitate student learning.
  • Interprets verbal communication in meetings and activities with hearing impaired individuals for the purpose of assisting students, teachers, and parents in communicating effectively between voice to sign and sign to voice.
  • Monitors individual students, e.g., classroom library, playground activities, tests, extra-curricular activities, emergency drills, etc., for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.
  • Performs record-keeping and clerical functions, e.g., scheduling, copying, etc., for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing records and materials.
  • Prepares a variety of documents, reports, and written materials for the purpose of communicating information to parents, staff, providing written support, developing recommendations, and/or conveying information.
  • Provides instruction to hearing impaired students under the supervision of the teacher in accordance with lesson plans, e.g., reading, spelling, self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc., for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Provides interpretation for group meetings, e.g., ASL, SEE, CASE, MCE, etc., for the purpose of providing content understanding to hearing impaired participants.
  • Responds to emergency situations, e.g., injured student, fights, etc., for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Signs during various meetings and instructional activities, e.g., in-service, IEP classrooms, parent-teacher conferences, plays, programs, etc., for the purpose of conveying information and upgrading classroom skills necessary for the successful educational process for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Uses adapted classroom work, homework, assessment instruments under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing voice to sign and sign to voice support and/or reinforcing classroom objectives.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • SKILLS: Required to perform single technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
  • Operating equipment used in instructional media, machines, and specialized equipment for the hearing impaired.
  • Operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records and adhering to safety practices and procedures.
  • KNOWLEDGE: Required to perform algebra and/or geometry, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
  • Student behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • ASL or other manual communication language.
  • Practicing cultural competency while working collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Recordkeeping and record retention practices.
  • Health and safety regulations practices and procedures.
  • ABILITY: Required to schedule activities and/or meetings, gather and/or collate data, and use basic job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, work with data of varied types and/or purposes, and utilize specific job-related equipment. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups, work with data of varied types and/or purposes, and utilize specific job-related equipment. Some problem-solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans.

Work Environment

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands:

  • The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Skills: Required to perform single technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Knowledge: Required to perform algebra and/or geometry, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others and solve practical problems.
  • Ability: Required to schedule activities and/or meetings, gather and/or collate data, and use basic job-related equipment.
  • Education:
  • Targeted job-related education with study in a job-related area.
  • Equivalency: An educational interpreter shall be certified by the National RID or equivalent in lieu of certification or equivalent an educational interpreter must have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA, the ESSE-IR, or the NADACCI assessment.
  • Experience:
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
  • Equivalency:
  • An educational interpreter must have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA-Cued Speech for Cued Language transliteration.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Certified by the National RID or EIPA ESSE-IR or the NADACCI assessment score of 4.0 or above.
  • ESSA compliance: One of the following documents:
  • AA degree or higher.
  • Transcripts verifying 48 semester units or more.
  • Documentation that you have taken and passed the Paraprofessional Exam.
  • Submit 2 Letters of Recommendation current within 5 years.
