    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY

The EHS Manager leads the development and execution of a scalable environmental, health and safety management system across seven ambient and temperature-controlled, food-grade warehouse facilities. Initially an individual-contributor leadership role, this position establishes network standards, strengthens leadership accountability, reduces operational risk and maintains regulatory compliance. The EHS Manager has authority to stop work when an imminent or serious risk is identified.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    EHS Management System and Governance

    • Develop the Warehouse Services EHS strategy, roadmap, annual operating plan and management system.
    • Establish policies, standards, procedures, audit protocols, governance routines and escalation requirements.
    • Serve as EHS program owner while site leaders remain accountable for daily execution and safe operating performance; advise leadership on material risks, trends and resource priorities.

    Risk Assessment and Regulatory Compliance

    • Lead network and site risk assessments covering powered industrial trucks, pedestrian interaction, material handling, ergonomics, racking, docks, battery charging, machinery, contractors and facility conditions.
    • Maintain applicable federal, state and local programs, permits, records, postings and regulatory reporting, including OSHA and state-specific requirements.
    • Develop and govern controls for high-risk activities, including lockout/tagout, hazard communication, electrical safety, fall protection, hot work, confined space and emergency response.
    • Integrate EHS requirements into new facilities, equipment, automation and process changes. Stop work without prior approval when serious risk exists; restart only after controls are verified by EHS and the responsible site leader.

Training, Incident Management and Employee Engagement

    • Deliver role-based training for leaders, employees, temporary labor and contractors; own powered industrial truck training and authorization standards.
    • Coach leaders on observations, inspections, safety discussions and corrective-action follow-through; strengthen near-miss reporting and employee participation.
    • Lead consistent reporting, investigation and escalation of injuries, illnesses, near misses and property-damage events; verify root causes and corrective-action effectiveness.
    • Partner with Human Resources and Operations on workers' compensation, medical management, transitional duty and return-to-work practices.

Performance, Property Risk and Emergency Preparedness

    • Maintain the EHS scorecard, executive reporting, site reviews, audits and corrective-action governance using leading and lagging indicators.
    • Apply trend analysis and continuous-improvement methods to reduce serious risk, recurring events and total cost of risk.
    • Govern property-risk and loss-prevention priorities through a cross-functional model involving Human Resources, Finance, Facilities and Operations. EHS establishes standards, audit requirements and risk priorities, while functional leaders remain accountable for execution.
    • Lead environmental compliance and emergency preparedness, including spill prevention, waste and chemical management, fire, evacuation, severe-weather and medical-response planning.
    • Partner with Food Safety and Quality Assurance while preserving FSQA ownership of food safety, product quality and certification requirements.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental health, engineering or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
    • Seven or more years of progressive EHS experience, including at least three years leading EHS programs across multiple sites or within a comparably complex operation.
    • Experience in warehousing, distribution, logistics, manufacturing or another material-handling-intensive environment.
    • Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental requirements, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics, incident investigation, emergency response and contractor safety.
    • Strong analytical, communication, training and influencing skills; valid driver's license and ability to meet travel requirements.

    Preferred

    • CSP, ASP, CIH, CHST or similar certification; OSHA 30-hour or OSHA 511/501 coursework.
    • Experience in food-grade or temperature-controlled warehousing, Cal/OSHA-regulated operations, temporary labor, automation or facility expansion.
    • Experience with workers' compensation, insurance loss-control, EHS technology or performance dashboards; Spanish-language capability is valued.

    TRAVEL

Approximately 10% to 20% travel between campuses or satellite facilities, including occasional overnight travel. Response to significant events outside normal business hours may be required.
