Job Description

EHS, QMS & Regulatory Specialist

Specialty Chemical Manufacturer | Carlstadt, NJ | Full-Time, On-Site

About the Role

Our client, an established specialty chemical manufacturer, is looking for an EHS, QMS & Regulatory Specialist to take ownership of environmental health & safety, the quality management system, and product regulatory affairs at their Carlstadt manufacturing facility.

This is a hands-on, build-it role. In your first year, you'll help lead our facility through ChemStewards® and ISO 9001:2015 certification - then own and continuously improve both systems going forward. We're looking for someone with strong systems-building instincts and the drive to build this function from the ground up. Prior certification experience is a plus, but not required - what matters most is your ability to create structure where none exists and earn buy-in from people who don't report to you.

What You'll Do

Certification & Management Systems (First 6-12 Months)

Lead the ChemStewards implementation - gap assessment, corrective action planning, documentation, and preparation for third-party verification
Lead ISO 9001:2015 implementation - process mapping, internal audits, management reviews, and registrar/certification audits
Build the document and record control architecture (SOPs, work instructions, forms, revision control) underlying both systems

Environmental, Health & Safety

Own EHS compliance across federal, New Jersey, and local requirements (OSHA, HazCom/GHS, LOTO, machine guarding, PPE, and more)
Manage environmental permits and reporting (NJDEP, RCRA, NJPDES, EPCRA, TSCA) and DOT/PHMSA hazmat compliance
Run chemical safety programs, incident investigations, OSHA 300 logs, training, safety meetings, and facility inspections
Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections, insurance visits, and customer EHS audits

Product Regulatory Affairs

Verify and certify product/ingredient regulatory status (Prop 65, TSCA, SARA 313, and more) and track evolving chemical regulations
Manage SDS creation/updates, product labeling, customer regulatory inquiries, and vendor documentation requests
Prepare USMCA certifications, Certificates of Origin, and required regulatory filings

Quality

Own the quality management system across raw materials, in-process, and finished goods
Partner with R&D and Operations on specs, test methods, and the nonconforming material process
Run the internal audit program, manage the customer complaint process, and oversee supplier quality
What You Bring
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, occupational safety, or a related field
2-4 years of combined EHS and/or quality experience in chemical, specialty chemical, polymer, coatings, adhesives, or similar batch manufacturing
Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and OSHA/EPA/state environmental programs for chemical manufacturing
Experience with internal audits, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action
Strong SOP-writing and training skills, with solid MS Office and ERP/quality systems proficiency
Comfort driving compliance across teams without direct authority - and the initiative to own ambiguous, build-from-scratch work

Nice to have: direct experience with ChemStewards or a comparable EHS&S system (Responsible Care®, RC14001); experience in dispersion, emulsion, or polymer manufacturing; prior work at a growing or newly acquired manufacturer where systems were being built, not inherited.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role in an active chemical manufacturing facility. You'll spend time in production areas requiring PPE (safety glasses, footwear, gloves, and periodic respiratory protection), and should be comfortable standing/walking for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
