Job Description

The English Learner (EL) Teacher serves as a specialist for students who are learning English as a second language. The EL teacher provides direct English language acquisition instruction in small group and individual student settings. The EL teacher aligns instruction to the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards which represent the social, instructional, and academic language students use to engage with peers, educators and the standards-based curriculum in schools. In addition, the EL teacher assists general education classroom teachers with the selection of appropriate curricula resources and the implementation of evidenced-based strategies to meet the unique needs of English learners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Wisconsin English as a Second Language teacher license or eligibility to obtain

appropriate license upon hire required.

Strong background in literacy and language acquisition

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following:

Provide push in and/or pull out targeted academic language acquisition instruction to EL students

based upon individual needs.

Act as a resource for colleagues by modeling instructional strategies, identifying and

developing instructional resources, and providing professional development related to the needs

of EL students.

Facilitate the development of Individual Language Plans (ILPs) for all EL students and work

with classroom teachers to implement the plans.

Co-plan to co-serve with classroom teachers to scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet

individual student needs within the academic core.

Engage in collaborative student-centered, data-informed decision-making and planning to

support the needs of EL students.

Participate as an active team member in the discussion of academic, transition, graduation, and

college and career readiness issues related to EL students.

Administer English language proficiency assessments and screeners (including the WIDA

screener, ACCESS, and Alternate ACCESS).

Maintain complete and accurate records of student growth and progress in meeting language

acquisition goals.

Establish and maintain communication with parents of EL students and engage parents and

families in their student's learning.
