About Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD)

Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) is the third-largest juvenile justice agency in the country and the second-largest department in Harris County, employing over 1,200 professionals dedicated to youth justice transformation and reform. About Education Services:

The Education Services Division provides educational programs for expelled students, troubled youth placed in a county-operated juvenile institution, and students on probation who want an alternative to the traditional high school campus. The Juvenile Probation Department is solely responsible for all programs of the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP), Excel Academy Charter School, and the Opportunity Center.

Position Overview:

The ELA/ESL Teacher provides students with appropriate learning, activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Teachers manage multiple courses during each class period while ensuring student perform at the optimum level and encourage a therapeutic environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implement lesson plans with necessary accommodations that fulfill the requirements of the districts curriculum program, based on TEKS, as well as LPAC requirements for multiple grades and subjects.
  • Maintains accurate students grades, work, and documentation related to special populations.
  • Creates classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Works cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited university in English or Education.

Certification and Licensure:

  • A valid Texas Teaching certification in English and ESL conferred by the Texas State Board of Education.

  • Employees in this position must possess and maintain a valid Texas Drivers license and maintain liability insurance coverage at least equal to the minimum amounts required by law.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong Classroom Management.

  • Good written and oral communication.

  • Basic Computer Skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.

  • Ability to plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of learning styles and needs of students assigned.

  • Knowledge and ability to conduct LPAC meetings.

  • Must be 21 years of age.

Additional Requirements:

  • Upon receiving a conditional job offer, all applicants must undergo a criminal background check and drug screening.

  • This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.
