Our client is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to design, program, and support advanced vacuum and controlled atmosphere furnace systems operating at temperatures up to 3200°C. This role is responsible for the complete electrical and controls design process, including component selection, PLC/HMI programming, system testing, troubleshooting, and project documentation.

The ideal candidate combines strong controls engineering expertise with hands-on problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and field service teams to deliver reliable, high-performance systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical and controls systems for vacuum and controlled atmosphere furnaces based on customer specifications and performance requirements
  • Select electrical, instrumentation, and controls components with a focus on performance, cost efficiency, and technical reliability
  • Develop control cabinet layouts, electrical schematics, instrumentation configurations, and bills of materials
  • Program, configure, and test PLC and HMI systems
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering to support system integration and design modifications
  • Analyze system performance and test results, recommending improvements as needed
  • Troubleshoot controls-related issues during production, testing, commissioning, and field support activities
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, schematics, technical documentation, and operating manuals
  • Complete and maintain accurate "as-built" documentation for finished systems
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical support to internal teams and customers

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of controls engineering experience
  • Experience designing, programming, and testing PLC and HMI systems
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively

Controls & Automation Experience

Experience with some or all of the following:

  • Allen-Bradley: MicroLogix, SLC 500, ControlLogix, FactoryTalk View ME/SE, Kinetix, and PowerFlex Drives
  • GE Proficy iFIX
  • Mitsubishi FX PLCs
  • Siemens S7 PLCs
  • Honeywell HC900
  • SpecView
  • Yokogawa and Eurotherm instrumentation

Preferred

  • Knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, and UL 508A standards
  • Familiarity with NFPA 86 furnace standards
  • Experience with industrial heating, thermal processing, vacuum systems, or furnace equipment
  • Vacuum furnace industry experience strongly preferred
