Electrical Designer

Clayton Services is searching for an Electrical Designer to join a thriving company in Houston. The Electrical Designer will be responsible for developing electrical drawings, layouts, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation from initial concepts and project requirements. This position requires someone who can originate electrical designs and drawings from scratch, not simply revise existing drawings or incorporate redlines.

Electrical Designer Responsibilities:

• Develop electrical drawings and complete design packages from initial project requirements, concepts, and specifications.
• Create original electrical drawings rather than relying solely on existing drawings or engineering redlines.
• Develop detailed 2D electrical enclosure and control panel layouts.
• Create wiring diagrams, schematics, and related electrical documentation.
• Work closely with customers, production teams, project managers, engineers, and other disciplines to develop accurate designs for manufacturing, installation, construction, and wiring.
• Translate customer requirements and project specifications into practical electrical designs.
• Ensure drawings comply with applicable electrical codes, company standards, third-party requirements, and customer specifications.
• Review vendor drawings and incorporate approved equipment and component information into project designs.
• Revise and update drawings based on engineering review, customer feedback, and project changes.
• Maintain accurate document control, drawing revisions, and project records.
• Assist with standardizing electrical design templates, symbols, and drafting practices.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to electrical design, manufacturing, and shop efficiency.
• Perform basic electrical calculations as required to support design activities.

Electrical Designer Skills and Abilities:

• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or comparable electrical design software.
• Demonstrated ability to create electrical drawings and designs from scratch.
• Strong understanding of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and electrical symbols.
• Knowledge of power systems, motor controls, PLC layouts, and instrumentation diagrams.
• Familiarity with UL 508A, UL 698A, NNNY, and applicable electrical design standards.
• Ability to interpret project specifications and convert requirements into complete electrical drawings.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Electrical Designer Education and Experience:

• 2-3+ years of experience using AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent software for electrical design.
• 2-3+ years of experience independently originating electrical drawings, including panel layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Previous experience designing electrical control panels, industrial electrical systems, or related equipment strongly preferred.
• Formal electrical design, drafting, engineering technology, or related technical training required.
• Electrical Engineering degree is a plus but not required.
• Experience working with UL 508A control panels and industrial automation or controls environments is highly preferred.
