Job Title: Electrical Designer

Job Description

This role focuses on providing electrical design and drafting services using AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM tools for highly technical design-build and bid-build projects across multiple sectors, including industrial, data centers, commercial, government, and energy. The Electrical Designer develops detailed power distribution, lighting, telecom, data, and fire alarm layouts, supports BIM coordination, and collaborates closely with engineers, architects, and contractors to deliver accurate and code-compliant designs. The position offers opportunities for continuing education and professional growth within a collaborative and supportive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed and conceptual electrical drafting designs for normal power distribution systems.
  • Design emergency power generation and distribution systems, ensuring reliability and code compliance.
  • Coordinate device locations and routing with mechanical, plumbing, and other consultants for projects such as offices, hospitals, warehouses, kitchens, and site developments.
  • Create lighting layouts that meet project requirements and applicable codes.
  • Produce power layouts for power distribution systems, including panel schedules and equipment arrangements as required.
  • Design telecom and data layouts to support communication and network infrastructure.
  • Develop fire alarm layouts in accordance with project specifications and relevant codes.
  • Prepare complete electrical plans and permit drawings suitable for submission to authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Review project specifications and equipment cut sheets to confirm proper selection, application, and installation methods of electrical components.
  • Interpret process control and instrumentation documentation to support electrical components and panel layouts.
  • Document design work accurately using AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP, maintaining clear and organized project files.
  • Perform BIM modeling and coordination to resolve clashes and ensure alignment with other disciplines.
  • Validate and document existing field conditions to support accurate as-built and design documentation.
  • Attend BIM, design, owner, architect, contractor, and subcontractor meetings as needed to support project coordination and decision-making.
  • Complete assigned tasks within agreed-upon deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Assist the estimating department with quantity take-offs and design-related support for bids and proposals.
  • Participate in QA/QC review of shop drawings prior to release for construction to ensure accuracy and compliance with design intent.

Essential Skills

  • 2-5 years of experience as an Electrical MEP designer or electrical designer, preferably with 2-3 years of experience working with BIM in an electrical contractor or MEP firm environment.
  • Proficiency in electrical design, including power distribution, lighting, telecom, data, and fire alarm layouts.
  • Hands-on experience using AutoCAD for electrical drafting and documentation.
  • Proficiency with Revit MEP for 3D modeling and coordination of electrical systems.
  • Practical experience with BIM processes and coordination on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and its application to the safe installation of electrical equipment.
  • Ability to perform power layouts for power distribution systems, including normal and emergency power.
  • Capability to interpret process control and instrumentation diagrams for electrical components and panel layouts.
  • Experience preparing electrical plans and permit drawings in compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to review project specifications and equipment cut sheets to verify correct products, applications, and installation methods.
  • Strong understanding of BIM project procedures, principles, and collaboration practices.
  • Ability to perform QA/QC of shop drawings prior to release for construction.
  • Strong organizational skills to document design work and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within project budgets.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Drafting and Design or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with design-build and bid-build projects across sectors such as industrial, data centers, commercial, government, and energy.
  • Experience coordinating with mechanical, plumbing, and other consultants on complex projects.
  • Familiarity with project environments including offices, hospitals, warehouses, kitchens, and site developments.
  • Experience attending and contributing to BIM, design, and coordination meetings with owners, architects, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Ability to support estimating teams with design-related input and quantity take-offs.
  • Strong teaming and collaboration skills for effective participation in BIM projects.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality in drafting, documentation, and coordination.
  • Interest in continuing education and staying current with evolving design tools and codes.

Work Environment

The role is primarily office-based, with most work performed in a design office environment using AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and BIM coordination tools. The position may require occasional field visits to project sites, where the Electrical Designer may work near moving mechanical parts and in varying outdoor weather conditions. During field activities, the individual may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and a risk of electrical shock. Noise levels in the work environment are usually moderate. The organization promotes a friendly and engaging culture, featuring a yearly holiday party, a weekly ice cream truck during the summer, donuts delivered by vendors on certain weekdays, and opportunities for continuing education. Casual Fridays contribute to a relaxed yet professional atmosphere.
