Electrical Engineer - Power Innovation (Commissioning)

Salt Lake City, Utah

$59.00-$61.00 per hour

Contract

On-site

Are you passionate about bringing complex power systems online safely and efficiently? We're seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer - Power Innovation (Commissioning) to play a critical role in commissioning and startup activities for cutting-edge power generation and energy infrastructure projects. If you enjoy solving technical challenges in the field and working alongside multidisciplinary teams, this opportunity is for you.

What You'll Do

  • Provide electrical engineering support throughout pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, and system turnover.
  • Lead and support commissioning activities for switchgear, transformers, generators, protection relays, and control systems.
  • Validate power system studies, including short circuit, coordination, and arc flash analyses, against as-built conditions prior to energization.
  • Execute and oversee electrical testing such as insulation resistance, hi-pot, relay testing, and functional verification.
  • Support loop checks, calibration, and protection system verification during pre-commissioning.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, PSSR, and Ready for Startup (RFSU) activities to ensure successful system turnover.
  • Collaborate with Project Management, Construction, Controls, Commissioning, and Operations teams to ensure project readiness.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems in the field during commissioning and startup.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and all applicable safety requirements.
  • Support integration and performance validation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and power generation systems.
  • Prepare and maintain commissioning documentation, including ITRs, test records, redlines, and turnover packages.
  • Track and resolve punch list items before final handover.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors during installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and standardized commissioning processes.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support their professional development.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited), or a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology with a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • 4+ years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning within power generation, industrial, or related industries.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, commissioning processes, electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and control systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or actively pursuing licensure.
  • Experience with power generation facilities, data centers, or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Experience leading or supporting commissioning and startup activities.
  • Familiarity with FAT/SAT execution and system turnover processes.

Technical Skills

  • Experience using power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Hands-on experience with protection relay testing and electrical test equipment, including Omicron, Doble, and Megger.
  • Understanding of protection coordination, arc flash analysis, grid integration, energy storage systems, and DCS/SCADA integration.

Work Environment

This is an on-site, field-based position supporting active construction, commissioning, and startup projects. Candidates should be comfortable working in industrial environments while maintaining a strong commitment to safety.
