Job Description

Job Title: Electrical Engineer

Department: Engineering

Plant Location: Hammond, IN

Position Summary:

The Electrical Engineer supports the reliability, efficiency, and safety of all electrical and automation systems throughout Jupiter Aluminums manufacturing facility.

This role is responsible for maintaining and upgrading electrical infrastructure, overseeing PLC and HMI programming, supporting troubleshooting and root cause analysis, and leading electrical projects for capital improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Integrate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain drives, PLCs, instrumentation, motor control centers, AC/DC motors, and related electrical systems.
  • Program, modify, and upgrade automated machinery using PLC and HMI systems.
  • Diagnose equipment failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime.
  • Upgrade existing equipment and commission new machine controls and automation systems.
  • Install, configure, and program sensors, scanners, encoders, and other automated devices.
  • Tune servo motors, VFDs, and motion control systems for optimal equipment performance.
  • Work directly with OEMs, contractors, and vendors to resolve equipment, controls, and programming issues.
  • Create equipment specifications and verify system performance during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and startup.
  • Support research, purchasing, installation, and startup of new production equipment and automated systems.
  • Train maintenance technicians and operations personnel on equipment operation, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
  • Maintain accurate electrical documentation including schematics, control logic, software backups, and revision history.
  • Support facility-wide electrical systems including power distribution, utilities, and infrastructure needs.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and applicable electrical standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and reliability.

Working Conditions:

  • Dual office/plant floor environment; 5070% time spent near operating machinery and production lines.
  • Exposure to electrical hazards, rotating equipment, high heat near furnaces, and noise levels requiring hearing protection.
  • Standard MondayFriday schedule with on-call support for electrical issues affecting production.
  • Must wear arc-rated FR clothing, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats as required

Qualifications: Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering required; Masters degree or PE license preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of industrial electrical engineering experience, with at least 2 years in heavy manufacturing (aluminum, steel, paper, etc.).
  • Proficient with Rockwell, Siemens, and ABB controls platforms in high-speed and high-heat industrial settings.
  • Demonstrated experience with motor control systems (across low and medium voltage), VFD tuning, and servo systems.
  • Experienced in grounding system design, power factor correction, and harmonics mitigation in power-intensive operations.
  • Familiar with ISO 14001/50001 energy efficiency projects, including compressed air management, load shedding, and lighting retrofits.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders, enter confined electrical enclosures, and maneuver around mill floor obstructions.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs during inspections or component replacement.
  • Ability to wear PPE and operate near energized systems with proper clearance.
