Electronics Design Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on the design, development, modification, and analysis of advanced electronic systems that support C4I network computing, integrated situational awareness, embedded diagnostics, vehicle power management, and combat vehicle integration. You will own circuit card assembly designs from concept through delivery, ensuring robust, long-life, and cost-effective solutions. The position requires a hands-on engineer who is comfortable in the lab, capable of troubleshooting complex hardware, and able to clearly communicate design decisions to internal teams and customers.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, analyze, document, and support testing of electronic products, systems, and subsystems, including circuit card assemblies and related hardware.
- Contribute to the design, development, modification, and analysis of electronics systems, which may include hardware, power electronics, electromagnetic engineering, integrated circuits, and components.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in existing products or systems and implement modifications and improvements as needed.
- Compile, evaluate, and interpret design and test data to validate performance and reliability.
- Analyze requirements and develop recommended design approaches that balance performance, reliability, cost, and schedule.
- Use computer-aided engineering and design/analysis tools such as Cadence schematic capture, Allegro, and circuit simulation software (e.g., SPICE) to perform design tasks.
- Report progress and status regularly to stakeholders, ensuring transparency on technical activity, schedule, and budget.
- Review customer specifications and requirements and, under direction, develop designs that best support those requirements with cost considered as a key design variable.
- Provide budget, cost, and schedule input for assigned design tasks and support design-to-cost objectives.
- Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems, and services to ensure they meet technical and quality requirements.
- Support design-for-manufacture and design-to-cost requirements, collaborating with procurement and manufacturing teams as needed.
- Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept hardware to retire key development risks and validate design choices.
- Bring up new circuit card assemblies from scratch, including power-on, debugging, and functional verification.
- Troubleshoot issues across hardware and firmware/software boundaries, distinguishing hardware faults from FW/SW problems.
- Define rework approaches and write clear, detailed instructions for technicians to perform modifications and repairs.
- Perform and document lab testing, including thermal testing and measurements using oscilloscopes and other test equipment.
- Explain design decisions clearly, both in writing and verbally, including SWaP-C (size, weight, power, and cost) tradeoffs and margin considerations.
- Support procurement and fabrication by selecting component alternates and answering technical questions from PCB fabricators and contract manufacturers.
- Participate in the preparation of less complex technical proposals, providing engineering input and estimates.
- Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel, contributing to a collaborative engineering environment.
- Attend relevant engineering, customer, or business meetings to support program objectives and communicate technical status.
- Support, communicate, reinforce, and uphold the mission, values, and culture of the organization in daily work.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in electronics design or a closely related field.
- Hands-on electronics design experience as a problem-solver and "doer," with direct ownership of circuit card assembly designs from concept through delivery.
- Proficiency with Cadence schematic capture and ability to navigate Allegro for PCB-related tasks.
- Experience designing high-speed digital circuits, including processors, FPGAs, microcontrollers (MCUs), and memory interfaces such as DDRx and EEPROM.
- Knowledge of digital interfaces such as PCIe, USB, Ethernet up to 10G, serial interfaces, LVDS, DisplayPort, and HDMI.
- Experience with point-of-load power design, including switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and linear regulators.
- Ability to simulate circuits using SPICE or similar circuit simulation tools.
- Comfort working at the electronics bench in a development lab environment, including use of oscilloscopes and other test equipment.
- Ability to perform fine rework, including soldering under a microscope when needed.
- Demonstrated ability to bring up new circuit card assemblies, including initial power-on, debugging, and testing.
- Capability to troubleshoot complex issues and differentiate between hardware and firmware/software problems.
- Competent technical expertise and application domain knowledge relevant to electronic systems design.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain design decisions and SWaP-C tradeoffs clearly.
- Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, and complete technical activities on time and within budget.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Allegro PCB layout and creation of PCB drawings.
- Experience with rugged cable design and preparation of detailed drawing notes.
- Familiarity with VHDL and Verilog for FPGA-related design or integration.
- Experience mentoring other engineers or providing task leadership in a project setting.
- Experience in electromagnetic engineering, power electronics, or integrated circuit engineering.
- Experience specifying and evaluating supplier components, subsystems, and services.
- Familiarity with design-for-manufacture and design-to-cost principles.
- Ability to prepare and document lab test procedures and results, including thermal testing.
- Experience participating in the preparation of technical proposals or engineering estimates.
Work Environment
You will work in an engineering-focused environment that supports the development of advanced C4I network computing, situational awareness, embedded diagnostics, and vehicle power management systems for demanding applications. The role is primarily based in a development lab and office setting, where you will use tools such as Cadence schematic capture, Allegro, SPICE or similar circuit simulation software, oscilloscopes, thermal test setups, and standard electronic lab equipment. The position involves hands-on bench work, including prototype bring-up, debugging, and occasional fine soldering under a microscope. You will collaborate closely with other engineers, technicians, procurement, manufacturing partners, and customers, attending engineering and business meetings as needed. The culture emphasizes technical excellence, accountability for cost and schedule, clear communication, and support for the organization's mission and values.
