Matrix designs, manufactures, and sells innovative technological products that help keep people safe. Originally focused on the underground coal mining industry, Matrix has expanded into new industrial markets in the United States and globally.

We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Application Engineering Group (AEG). This position will be responsible for the design, development, prototyping, and testing of certain industrial products and equipment, particularly related to fork truck machine integration harnesses and components. This role will also be required to support the installation of equipment/products and provide support and training to technicians and field services personnel. Support activities may take the form of e-mails, phone calls, site visits at vendors or partner facilities, supporting initial product installations and testing or troubleshooting abnormal or unusual issues observed in the field. Candidate must be a self-starter, with the ability to work alone or in a small team. This position works in a team environment at our home office in Newburgh, IN. This is not a remote position.

This position reports to the VP of Product and Technology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain wiring harness specifications, schematics, integration drawings, and assembly documentation for industrial product applications.
  • Lead fork truck integration design projects, including electrical system layout, connector selection, harness routing, and customer interface coordination.
  • Support throttle inhibitor product development, functional testing, and field deployment for industrial product lines.
  • Interface with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to determine requirements for correct system installation and integration.
  • Perform detailed electrical design and equipment layouts to ensure hardware integration meets all system and customer requirements.
  • Evaluate electrical systems, products, and components through structured test methods and research programs; confirm system capabilities, document results, and prepare detailed field reports for development engineers.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and provide technical support and training to customers, technicians, and field services personnel on system operation and maintenance.
  • Aid as technical lead on installations, startup, and commissioning of various industrial products.
  • Interface with sales, manufacturing, field services, and accounting during various phases of a project or product development.
  • Estimate cost, reliability, and safety factors associated with design and integration activities.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • Experience with wiring harness design, electrical schematics, and industrial integration is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with forklift or industrial vehicle electrical systems
  • Strong background in industrial controls systems preferred.
  • Must have basic computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good working knowledge of basic analog and digital circuits; must have electrical test, measurement, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience using various types of lab test equipment (DMMs, power supplies, function generators, oscilloscopes) is desired.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills; must possess the ability to develop and clearly communicate new technical concepts and apply them accurately.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Capable of representing the company as a prime technical contact with customers.

Working Conditions

  • Most work will take place in a typical office, lab, or testing/development environment.
  • Regular work with or near industrial equipment including fork trucks, material handling machinery, and electrical test setups.
  • Visits to customer and end-use industrial sites, which may include warehouse, manufacturing, and distribution facility environments.
  • Occasional travel and ability to work various shifts as required by customer needs.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to work near large moving machinery.
  • The employee can be at risk of electrical shock; appropriate safety protocols must be followed at all times.
  • Matrix employees are furnished with and required to wear safety gear such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, reflective clothing, earplugs, and safety glasses when working in locations requiring such protective gear.
