What You'll Do
As a Protection & Control Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, analyzing, and implementing protection systems for electrical substations and transmission networks.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and review protection and control (P&C) engineering designs for electrical substation projects ranging from 4kV through 765kV.
- Prepare and review relay protection settings, setting calculations, setting files, and associated technical deliverables.
- Perform transmission system modeling, short-circuit fault analysis, and protection coordination studies.
- Conduct area protection studies and recommend settings for new and existing transmission line and station protection schemes.
- Support compliance activities related to NERC standards, including PRC-023, FAC-008, and other applicable requirements.
- Evaluate transmission planning proposals and provide technical recommendations related to protection and control systems.
- Collaborate with transmission customers, interconnected utilities, operations teams, planners, telecommunications groups, and project managers.
- Provide engineering support during installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and system startup activities.
- Investigate protection system performance, analyze fault records and interruption reports, and develop effective corrective actions.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of system-wide protection, metering, and control standards.
- Participate in project scheduling, resource planning, budgeting, and cost control activities.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience in power systems, substation engineering, protection & control engineering, or related electrical engineering fields.
- Knowledge of relay protection principles, transmission systems, fault analysis, and substation protection schemes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with transmission or distribution substations.
- Familiarity with NERC compliance requirements and protection standards.
- Experience performing short-circuit studies, coordination studies, and relay settings development.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
- A Master's or Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering is welcome.
Alternative Education Qualifications
Candidates may also qualify with:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (non-ABET) plus a PE license in any U.S. state; or
- A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program.
