Job Description

Space is a warfighting domain. True Anomaly seeks those with the talent and ambition to build the technology that secures it.

OUR MISSION

True Anomaly delivers decisive capabilities for space superiority. We build autonomous spacecraft, advanced payloads, mission software, and space-based interceptors - enabling the U.S. and its Allies to secure the space environment and counter threats from the ultimate high ground.

OUR VALUES

  • Be the offset. We create asymmetric advantages with creativity and ingenuity.
  • What would it take? We challenge assumptions to deliver ambitious results.
  • It's the people. Our team is our competitive advantage and we are better together.

YOUR MISSION

True Anomaly is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to design and develop electrical system architectures for our next-generation space vehicles. You will be responsible for defining system-level electrical architectures, performing system reliability analysis, and ensuring seamless integration of power, data, and control systems across the spacecraft. Working at the intersection of hardware design and systems engineering, you will translate mission requirements into robust electrical system solutions that meet performance, reliability, and mass constraints for space flight operations. This role emphasizes systems-level thinking - understanding how electrical subsystems interact and ensuring the overall architecture meets mission needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop electrical system architectures and block diagrams for spacecraft avionics, including power distribution networks, grounding schemes, and signal routing topologies
  • Create and maintain system-level block diagrams, functional flow diagrams, and architecture documentation to communicate design intent across engineering teams
  • Conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for electrical systems to identify potential failure modes, assess risk, and drive design improvements
  • Review and evaluate electrical components, parts, and COTS products to ensure they meet mission requirements, reliability standards, and environmental specifications
  • Perform component selection and qualification planning including evaluation of radiation tolerance, temperature range, voltage margins, and derating requirements
  • Develop electrical interface requirements and specifications for avionics components including flight computers, sensors, actuators, and communication systems
  • Perform electrical system analysis including power budgets, voltage drop calculations, fault analysis, and load flow studies to ensure system performance and reliability
  • Design custom avionics hardware including power conditioning units, motor controllers, sensor interface boards, and data acquisition systems for space applications
  • Create detailed electrical schematics, BOMs, and design documentation using industry-standard CAD tools (Altium, OrCAD, or similar)
  • Conduct worst-case circuit analysis, derating studies, and reliability assessments to ensure designs meet space qualification requirements
  • Define and manage electrical interfaces between subsystems including mechanical mounting, thermal management, and electromagnetic compatibility
  • Develop and execute test plans for electrical system verification including functional testing, environmental qualification, and EMI/EMC testing
  • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and troubleshooting using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, logic analyzers)
  • Collaborate with harness design teams to define cable routing, connector specifications, and wire gauge requirements
  • Perform trade studies on component selection, architecture alternatives, and design approaches to optimize system performance, reliability, and cost
  • Support integration and test activities including spacecraft-level electrical checkout, continuity testing, and flight readiness verification
  • Participate in design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) presenting electrical architecture, block diagrams, FMEA results, analysis, and verification status
  • Create and maintain electrical system documentation including ICDs, architecture diagrams, test procedures, analysis reports, and as-built drawings

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in electrical system design, preferably in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability applications
  • Strong fundamentals in circuit design, power electronics, and electrical system architecture
  • Experience conducting system-level reliability analysis including FMEA, fault tree analysis, or similar methodologies
  • Proficiency creating system architecture diagrams, block diagrams, and technical documentation using tools such as Visio, Lucidchart, or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and select electrical components based on mission requirements, environmental specifications, and reliability criteria
  • Proficiency with electrical CAD tools for schematic capture and PCB layout (Altium, OrCAD, EAGLE, or similar)
  • Experience with electrical analysis including circuit simulation (SPICE), power budget analysis, and worst-case analysis
  • Hands-on experience with hardware debugging and test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, signal generators)
  • Understanding of aerospace electrical standards including wire derating, connector selection, and EMI/EMC design practices
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail in design and documentation
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with spacecraft electrical systems including EPS, flight computers, motor control, or sensor systems
  • Familiarity with space-grade components, radiation effects, and qualification testing (vibration, thermal-vacuum, life testing)
  • Experience with high-voltage systems, battery management, or solar array design
  • Knowledge of digital communication protocols used in spacecraft (CAN, SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553, RS-422, SPI, I2C)
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for electrical system modeling and analysis
  • Understanding of FPGA or embedded processor interfaces and digital logic design
  • Familiarity with NASA or MIL standards (NASA-STD-8739, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1540) and aerospace quality practices
  • Experience with requirements management and systems engineering processes
  • Background in signal integrity, power integrity, or high-speed digital design
  • Experience working with government or defense customers on space or launch vehicle programs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is based at our primary development facility and involves both office-based design work and hands-on lab activities. Work includes extended periods at a computer workstation for design and analysis, as well as time in the lab and cleanroom environments for hardware testing and integration.
