Job Overview: An Engineer works with more experienced engineers to design building electrical, fire alarm, and low voltage systems.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- System Design: Calculations
- Learns to perform calculations including:
- Electric service load calculations
- Voltage drop calculations
- Short circuit calculations
- Lighting calculations
- COMcheck energy calculations
- System Design: Drafting
- Works with supervisor to layout receptacles, panelboards, equipment, lighting/control, and fire alarm devices utilizing Revit 3D software.
- Produces drawing sets, including but not limited to, drawing notes, details, and single line diagrams.
- Selects equipment, such as receptacles, panelboards, lighting control, and fire alarm devices.
- Gains understanding of different electrical system types.
- Construction Administration
- Conducts preliminary review of submittals and RFIs.
- Sustainability
- Gains experience working on sustainable projects.
- Gains familiarity with various certifications (LEED, etc.).
- Design Coordination
- Collaborates with fellow electrical engineers within their studio.
- Asks meaningful questions.
- Client Interface
- Presents self in a professional manner when interacting with external stakeholders.
- Code/References
- Familiarizes themselves with international and local building codes.
- Learns energy codes.
- Gains knowledge of NEC (National Electric Code) and NFPA codes.
- Additional tasks as requested.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or architectural engineering, or similar field.
- Has EIT certification or is working towards it.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Autodesk Revit a plus.
