    Job Description

    Plains End is a 228 MW natural gas-fired power generation facility consisting of two reciprocating engine peaking plants. Plains End I began commercial operation in 2002 with 113 MW of generating capacity, followed by the 115 MW Plains End II in 2008. Together, the facilities provide flexible, reliable generation to help meet regional electricity demand, particularly during periods of peak energy use.

    Opportunity Summary

    The Electrical Maintenance Technician at Plains End plays an important role in ensuring the facility’s natural gas-fired reciprocating engine generating units remain safe, reliable, and ready for operation. This position performs advanced troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and technical support for generators, switchyard equipment, control systems, and other plant electrical infrastructure. The Electrical Technician also contributes to outage activities and equipment improvements, shares technical expertise with plant personnel, and helps maintain high standards for safety and regulatory compliance.

    As an Electrical Maintenance Technician, you will support plant operations through the following responsibilities:

    • Provide technical expertise for plant electrical equipment, including generators, excitation systems, transformers, switchgear, switchyard assets, and associated controls.
    • Troubleshoot electrical and control system failures, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve equipment reliability.
    • Inspect, test, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical and control systems supporting the facility’s reciprocating engine units, including engine starting, fuel gas, synchronization, load control, and protective relaying.
    • Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on plant electrical equipment, including high-voltage and switchyard systems up to 230 kV.
    • Test, calibrate, and commission electrical, instrumentation, and control components to verify proper operation and system integrity.
    • Safely perform electrical switching, equipment isolations, and LOTO activities in accordance with plant procedures and electrical safety requirements.
    • Support electrical modifications and equipment upgrades by reviewing drawings, specifications, procedures, and other technical documentation.
    • Participate in planned and unplanned outages, including troubleshooting, testing, contractor coordination, repairs, and equipment restoration.
    • Evaluate equipment condition and performance and recommend repairs, upgrades, or improvements that enhance plant reliability and efficiency.
    • Provide technical guidance and training to plant personnel, respond to electrical equipment failures and plant emergencies, and support the safe restoration of systems to service.
    • Maintain required maintenance and technical records while collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, contractors, and OEMs and complying with applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and operating requirements.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Working Relationships

    The Electrical Maintenance Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and works closely with plant leadership, contractors, and OEM representatives to support maintenance activities and plant operations.

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

    Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

    Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

    Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

    Fitness for Duty

    All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

    Work Schedule

    The Electrical Maintenance Technician works a rotating 12-hour shift schedule of 7 days on and 7 days off, rotating between day and night shifts. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call availability as needed to support plant operations and business needs.

    Compensation

    This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $49.99 to $54.17 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

    Technical Qualifications and Experience

    • High school diploma or equivalent is required, with an associate degree in electrical technology, power plant systems, or a related technical field preferred. Relevant industry or military electrical experience may be considered in lieu of additional education.
    • Journeyman-level electrical background, military equivalent, or comparable senior-level experience in power generation or heavy industrial environments.
    • Extensive knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems up to 230 kV, including maintenance and troubleshooting of substations, switchyards, and associated equipment.
    • Advanced troubleshooting and repair experience with generators, transformers, protective relays, control circuits, synchronization systems, and other plant electrical equipment.
    • Hands-on experience testing, calibrating, and commissioning electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment.
    • Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance practices and electrical diagnostic tools, including meggers and relay test equipment.
    • Experience performing electrical switching, LOTO, equipment isolation, and system restoration in accordance with established safety practices.
    • Proficiency with CMMS and other digital systems used for maintenance documentation, equipment history, and reliability tracking.
    • Strong communication and technical leadership skills, with the ability to interpret electrical drawings, procedures, specifications, and other technical documentation.
    • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
