Position OverviewWheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced
Electrical Test Technician for opportunities in Plano, McKinney, and Garland, TX. This position is responsible for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and verifying
low- and medium-voltage switchgear and related electrical equipment prior to shipment.
The Electrical Test Technician will perform comprehensive factory testing to ensure equipment meets project specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on switchgear testing experience, strong knowledge of electrical test equipment, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities- Perform pre-shipment factory testing of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, protective relays, circuit breakers, panelboards, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and associated control and communication systems.
- Perform relay functional and coordination testing.
- Conduct insulation resistance testing using a megger.
- Perform dielectric withstand (hipot) testing.
- Conduct contact resistance, timing, and trip testing.
- Perform primary and secondary injection testing as required.
- Verify control circuits, communication circuits, and equipment functionality.
- Validate equipment against project specifications, schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and engineering drawings.
- Operate relay test sets, megohmmeters, hipot testers, multimeters, timing test sets, and primary/secondary injection systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical and equipment anomalies identified during testing.
- Document defects and non-conformances and coordinate with engineering and manufacturing teams on corrective actions.
- Maintain complete and organized testing documentation, including test reports, drawings, results, and photographs.
- Ensure accurate completion of testing requirements while maintaining established production and testing schedules.
- Support process improvement initiatives focused on reducing test time, improving efficiency, and enhancing product quality.
- Assist with developing and updating factory testing procedures, checklists, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Follow applicable safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE requirements, and electrical safety practices.
- Maintain compliance with applicable NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and NETA standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications- Minimum of 5 years of experience testing low- and medium-voltage switchgear in a factory or manufacturing environment, or relevant military experience.
- Hands-on experience testing electrical power distribution equipment.
- Proficiency with electrical testing equipment, including:
- Relay test sets
- Megger / insulation resistance testers
- Hipot testers
- Multimeters
- Timing test sets
- Primary injection systems
- Secondary injection systems
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, engineering drawings, and project specifications.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong documentation skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to maintain production and testing schedules in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of relevant electrical and workplace safety requirements, including NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and NETA standards.
- Strong commitment to electrical safety, lockout/tagout procedures, and proper PPE requirements.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with protective relay manufacturers such as SEL, ABB, Schneider Electric, Siemens, or similar equipment.
- Experience working with microprocessor-based protective relays.
- Experience with factory pre-shipment commissioning, QA/QC, or manufacturing testing.
- Knowledge of primary and secondary injection testing.
- Experience with transformer and cable testing.
- Knowledge of switchgear coordination studies.
- NETA certification or related electrical testing credentials.
- OSHA safety training.
- NFPA arc-flash and PPE training.
Physical Requirements- Ability to stand for prolonged periods while working on a manufacturing floor.
- Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to safely work around electrical and manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
- Ability to wear required PPE and follow applicable electrical safety procedures.

factory and manufacturing environment, performing hands-on testing and verification of electrical power distribution equipment. The role requires strict adherence to safety procedures and close coordination with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and production personnel.
