The Electrician position plays a very important role in supporting campus facility operations as an active contributor. This role will work to maintain welcoming and safe facilities for students, staff, and visitors.

## Job Summary

### Electrician 1 Performs basic maintenance and repairs of electrical or lighting systems (600 volts or less) and their components, including distribution equipment, transformers, circuits, control panels, electrical system components (e.g., relays, contactors, and switches), and lighting fixtures. Troubleshoots issues with power and lighting. Performs preventative maintenance on electrical equipment and systems, including but not limited to maintaining circuits, motors, motor controllers, switches, transformers, and related components. Assists in routine inspections of building systems and equipment. Coordinates work with other trades, employees, CSU employees, and outside vendors and contractors to complete work assignments. Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities and parts inventory using a computerized maintenance management system. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

### Electrician 2 Performs advanced and routine troubleshooting and diagnostics on complex electrical, lighting, and control systems and their components. Independently manages electrical or lighting maintenance projects from start to finish while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality. Ensures compliance with electrical codes, regulatory guidelines, safety regulations, and institutional standards. Establishes preventative maintenance routines and performs replacement, installation, and maintenance of electrical, lighting, and control systems and their components. Assists in maintaining safe and reliable operation of campus power distribution. Operates designated equipment for routine maintenance and switching operations. Assists with training, mentoring, and leading other electricians under the guidance of Crew Leader Electrical. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

## Minimum Qualifications

### Electrician 1

  • High school diploma, GED, or state recognized equivalent.
  • Completion of a four (4) year accredited electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Experience as a journeyman electrician.
  • Ability to work second shift, weekends, and on-call hours as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting is over fifty (50) pounds, ability to buddy lift or use of tools to aid in lifting.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts in excess of twenty-five (25) feet.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy.

### Electrician 2

  • High school diploma, GED, or state recognized equivalent.
  • Completion of a four (4) year accredited electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Asbestos Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Certification.
  • Confined Space Certification and Fall Protection Certification (or ability to obtain certifications within one (1) year of hire).
  • Two (2) years experience as a journeyman electrician.
  • Experience with lighting and building controls.
  • Ability to work second shift, weekends, and on-call hours as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. If lifting is over fifty (50) pounds, ability to buddy lift or use of tools to aid in lifting.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, and various aerial lifts in excess of twenty-five (25) feet.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to establish and maintain driver eligibility under CSU Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy.

## Preferred Qualifications

### Electrician 1

  • Verifiable completion of training courses in electrical safety, installation, repair, and maintenance, electrical theory, or National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications.
  • Asbestos Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Certification, Confined Space Certification, and Fall Protection Certification (or ability to obtain certifications within one (1) year of hire).
  • Maintenance, repair, and electrical experience in an institutional, industrial, or manufacturing environment.

### Electrician 2

  • Verifiable completion of training courses in electrical safety, installation, repair, and maintenance, electrical theory, National Electric Code (NEC), or National Fire Protection Association 70E (NFPA).
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or other workplace safety certifications.
  • Maintenance, repair, and electrical experience in an institutional, industrial, or manufacturing environment.

## Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

### Electrician 1

  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical, lighting, and control systems.
  • Understanding of the NEC Code, motors, fuses, electrical infrastructure, and components.
  • Knowledge of new construction and repair techniques and of older building infrastructure repair techniques.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member.
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow instructions, and work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality.
  • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.
  • Proficient in use of digital and mobile (i.e., phone or tablet) maintenance work order systems, email, and messaging.

### Electrician 2

  • Advanced proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex electrical, lighting, and control systems and their components, and in electrical distribution systems (11400 volts) including substations, main-tie-main (MTM) configuration, and Kirk key interlock system.
  • Understanding of NEC Code, National Fire Protection Association 70E (NFPA) electrical safety code.
  • Knowledge of specialized electrical metering and measuring tools and equipment utilized to troubleshoot power quality.
  • Ability to perform electrical load and field arc flash calculations.
  • Knowledge of programming, operating, and troubleshooting lighting and power monitoring platforms (e.g., Lutron Power Monitoring Expert PME).
  • Advanced proficiency in new construction and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of older building infrastructure repair techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex problems and implement effective solutions quickly.
  • Ability to read and interpret working drawings, job specifications, technical documents, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work as an individual contributor and an effective team member.
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and lead electrical projects from start to finish while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Ability to use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely and effectively.
