Definition

The position of Electrical Service Technician is responsible installing, repairing, troubleshooting and maintaining electrical systems and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations. This position performs work in accordance with applicable codes, safety standards, and in compliance with federal, state, local and District guidelines and regulations.

Characteristic Work

Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

  • Ensure safety of students and staff through the safe operation of equipment and according to OSHA, PERRP and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair electrical systems, wiring, fixtures, and equipment as assigned.
  • Use digital multimeters, oscilloscopes and diagnostic software to troubleshoot and/or calibrate electrical equipment and devices.
  • Inspect and repair fire alarm systems and emergency battery backup/generator systems.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance activities on electrical systems and components as directed and scheduled.
  • Analyze circuits, wiring diagrams, drawings, schematics, technical manuals, etc., to install, repair, calibrate, maintain, replace, or service electric devices and systems.
  • May be require to respond to emergency service calls outside of normal working hours.
  • Works in conjunction with contracted services as required.
  • Schedule and provide communication regarding repairs, installation, inspection, etc. as required.
  • Order equipment and supplies as authorized. Maintain inventory records on parts and equipment as required.
  • Identify, document and implement corrective action for safety concerns and/or broken equipment.
  • Maintain required logs, work orders, and technical reporting as directed.
  • Responsible for operation of volt meter, amp probe, oscilloscope, thermal imaging camera, laptop, diagnostic software, air/power tools, cutting torch, etc.
  • May drive District-owned vehicles such as vans, trucks, bucket trucks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of paid experience in commercial or industrial electrical trade at the journeyman level.
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License.
  • Must complete and satisfactorily pass all required Civil Service exam/testing.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, ability to develop, foster, and cultivate relationships; and
  • Ability to communicate instructions, ideas, directives, etc., clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory, statutory codes, industry regulations, safety guidelines, etc.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.

Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVER S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid drivers license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Drivers License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
