Position Summary

The Electrician Assistant supports the Electrician and Facilities team members that oversee the College's facilities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the installation, repair, assessment, and maintenance of all the electrical components on campus. Electrical components range from receptacles and switches to switch gears, transformers, control systems, circuit breakers, lighting, and ballasts, etc. Additionally, the Electrician Assistant aids the Electrician, HVAC technicians and general maintenance staff with duties involving new construction, blueprint reviews, large projects, and a variety of tasks may require additional assistance or multiple team members to complete.

Reports to: Facilities Management Field Superintendent

The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range advertised. This position is open until filled.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

80 % Facilities Maintenance and Repairs

  • Assist electrician in the day-to-day electrical needs throughout the CSM property.
  • Maintains interior and exterior lighting systems on the La Plata Campus.
  • Performs code required inspections of all emergency lighting systems and routine functionality.
  • Assists with testing of electrical equipment and diagnosing problems within campus electrical systems.
  • Maintain the inventory of lamps, ballasts, and other high turnover electrical consumables needed to maintain campus lighting in good operation.
  • Assist in the resets over current protection devices in panels, controls, motors, heaters, alarms, and other electrical apparatus.
  • Assist in installs of raceways, boxes, wires, and other electrical devices.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by cleaning and maintaining electrical rooms and closets.
  • Maintain and keep track of all electrical tools, equipment for proper operation and wear and tear.
  • Report adverse findings to the Field Superintendent and electricians to be addressed in a timely manner.
  • Assist other trades as needed.

10% Event Support

  • Set up power cords and other electrical requirements in support of special events including, graduations, student events and conference center events.
  • Perform electrical technical support for campus wide events during and after hours.

5% Administrative Responsibilities

  • Responsible for documenting work performance through the Asset Essentials work request system.
  • Responsible of documenting of inventory usage and restocking of electrical and shop materials.

5% Emergency and Inclement Weather

  • Assists during emergency situations (e.g., school closings, power outages, inclement weather conditions, snow removal, bomb threats) and other duties outside of the electrical trade as assigned by the supervisor to ensure continuance of overall facilities operations.

Additional Duties:

  • Other duties as assigned by the FCL Field Superintendent and Electrician.

Minimum Education and Training

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years working in the electrical industry; on and with electrical components, electrical test equipment and safety electrical protection.
  • Understanding of the National Electric Code.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read electrical blueprints.
  • Knowledge in the use and care of hand tools associated with the trade including volt meters, amp meters and other electrical test equipment.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work from ladders and elevated platforms with knowledge of proper safety precautions.
  • The ability to work with other team members in different trades to perform, maintenance, installs and repairs.

Licenses, Certifications, or Additional Requirements

  • Position requires maintenance of insurability under the college vehicle liability insurance plan.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is heavy is in nature, requiring exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position requires the ability to work from ladders, man lifts, hoist ways, extreme outdoor and indoor conditions, dusty and unwelcoming environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. Occasionally work is required in undesirable and dangerous areas. The position requires working from tall ladders and man lifts up to 50 feet high.
