Purpose of the Position:

The Electrician II provides essential technical expertise to the UAH Facilities & Operations department, overseeing the complex electrical infrastructure that powers our academic and research community. Beyond standard installation and repair, this position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of electrical circuitry and equipment across a diverse portfolio of campus buildings and grounds.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Systems Installation & Infrastructure:

  • Install and troubleshoot indoor/outdoor lighting infrastructure.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of electrical systems and components, including clocks, ballasts, lamps, electrical panels, circuits, outlets, switches, and electrical circuitry.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced electricians, performing quality control checks on work in progress.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Advanced Troubleshooting & Specialized Repair:

  • Diagnose and repair complex power distribution failures, short circuits, and motor control malfunctions.
  • Maintain and repair electric motors, starters, contactors, and transformers.
  • Manage and execute the Preventive Maintenance (PM) program, shifting campus operations from reactive repairs to proactive system management.
  • Layout, bend, and install conduit systems and pull wiring for new and existing circuits.

Documentation, Project Support, & Technology:

  • Utilize mobile devices and tablets to manage the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and update work orders in real-time.
  • Estimate labor and material requirements for repair projects and renovations.
  • Provide technical support and site access to outside contractors during major construction or university renovations.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, and technical specifications to ensure all work meets National Electrical Code (NEC) standards.

Safety, Compliance, & Emergency Response:

  • Adhere to all OSHA, NFPA 70E (Arc Flash), and university safety regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site, ensuring all tools are in proper working order.
  • Participate in the department's on-call rotation and perform emergency overtime as required to maintain campus safety and continuity.
  • Communicate professionally with faculty, staff, and students to resolve facility-related concerns and service requests.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 years of full-time verifiable directly related work experience in the electrical trade (may include some schooling in the trade).
  • Considerable knowledge of electrical principles & techniques.
  • Comfortable working with low to medium voltages.
  • Must be able to work off a vertical lift.
  • Must possess a high degree of independent judgment.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all duties.
  • Ability to read & interpret blueprints & specifications.
  • Must participate in on-call rotation.
  • This employee will be a regular driver as defined in the UAH Vehicle Safety Management Program, which includes, but is not limited to, possessing a valid driver's license and maintaining an acceptable MVR in the judgment of the University's insurance company.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Graduate of trade or vocational school is preferred.
  • Journeyman's License is desired.
