THE POSITION
This position supervises the electrical shop within the Facilities and Real Property Management Division of the Public Works Department, overseeing electrical maintenance and repair services for a large portfolio of City-owned facilities-including police stations, fire stations, libraries, community centers, and other municipal buildings. This position supports electrical engineers and project teams on complex repairs, upgrades, and facility improvement projects by providing technical electrical expertise. The role prioritizes preventive maintenance and effective work planning to support safe, reliable facility operations while managing limited resources. Responsibilities include assigning and coordinating work, responding to service requests, and providing customer service to City departments.
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT
The ideal candidate has experience in electrical maintenance and repair within public works or similar environments, with the ability to supervise and lead electricians supporting municipal buildings such as police stations, fire stations, libraries, and community centers. A solid understanding of electrical codes, safety practices, and preventive maintenance for public facilities is desired. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, plus the ability to coordinate with City divisions, contractors, and facility users, are preferred. A proactive approach to safety, staff training, and continuous improvement, along with the ability to use maintenance and work order management systems, is highly desired.
DEFINITION
Plan, schedule, obtain materials for, supervise, and inspect the maintenance, repair, operation and alterations of electrical systems of City buildings, pumping stations, treatment facilities, and equipment. May personally perform or assist with more complicated and/or difficult tasks.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General direction is provided by a higher-level management position in the Division. Responsibilities include the direct and indirect supervision of Electricians, Craft workers and other personnel..

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Three years of experience as a journey-level electrician in commercial repair, maintenance, alteration, and construction, preferably including six months of experience in a supervisory capacity.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Residency Requirement:
Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

Eligibility: Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate's eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Electrician Supervisor examination.
Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.
Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass LiveScan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
