Amazon Leo is an initiative within Amazon that aims to revolutionize global connectivity through the development of a state-of-the-art Low Earth Orbit (LEO) interconnected satellite communication constellation. Our mission is to bridge the digital divide by delivering high-speed, low latency, internet services to under-served communities and remote communities around the world. By leveraging satellite technology, we are working towards a future where everyone has access to reliable and high-quality internet connectivity regardless of their location.

Amazon Leo for Government (ALG) Engineering organization is a multi-disciplinary technology team established to rapidly address the needs of targeted government and international customers with specific solutions that have the potential to scale. ALG Engineering leads the development and delivery of targeted and scalable solutions for custom space and terrestrial applications. ALG collaborates closely with Amazon Leo Commercial (ALC) to leverage the constellation of advance satellites to provide seamless and efficient communication capabilities to meet the needs of our customers. The ALG Engineering team is seeking highly technical and talented individuals who are passionate about creating unique solutions that result in a positive impact on a global scale.

We are seeking an experienced Production Manufacturing Engineer with expertise in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) to support electrical systems and components in aerospace applications. As a member of the ALG Engineering Integrated Systems Solutions organization, you will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to architect, design, and implement processes and tools to manufacture at scale space-based and terrestrial product solutions. The Production Manufacturing Engineer must be responsive, flexible, innovate, and able to success within a collaborative, fast-paced, dynamic environment.

As a member of the ALG Engineering Integrated Systems Solutions organization, the Production Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for defining the system architecture, processes, and tools to establish the ALG production line, implement quality control standards, manage production costs, develop the manufacturing execution system, and establish continuous improvement initiatives. The candidate will be responsible for the process and tools that enable the build and test of one or more of the following: satellite bus components & subsystems, RF payloads, opto-electrical payloads, custom ground terminals, or custom user terminals.

This includes analysis, optimization, and process improvements for continuous improvement across enterprise systems, equipment, tools, and facilities/site development. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring the production manufacturing architecture supports all aspects of the product development lifecycle between product design and production processes, including early design for manufacturability/cost, for maximized efficiency and product quality balanced against adaptability and modular production flows.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working on large-scale programs with a diverse set of talented individuals, as well as with partner organizations (including government agencies).

Key job responsibilities

  • Apply DFMA principles to electrical system designs, including circuit boards, wire harnesses, connectors, and avionics assemblies utilizing IPC-610/620
  • Collaborate with electrical design engineers and suppliers to optimize component selection, assembly sequences, and manufacturing processes
  • Develop and implement manufacturing processes for electrical assemblies including soldering, crimping, potting, and conformal coating
  • Create work instructions, process documentation, and quality control procedures for electrical assembly operations
  • Conduct design reviews to identify manufacturability issues in electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and harness designs
  • Support supplier selection and qualification for electrical components and subassemblies
  • Implement automated testing solutions for electrical systems including functional test, continuity checks, and hi-pot testing
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives through DFMA analysis of electrical assemblies
  • Ensure compliance with aerospace electrical standards (AS9100, IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620)
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for electrical assembly defects
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing BOMs, routings in MES, and cycle time standards.
  • Implement automated quality statistical process controls (SPC) and defined quality control standards
  • Specify, procure, network, and program various assembly equipment and systems for production manufacturing and test (programmable logic controller networking and programming knowledge through common protocols)
  • Implement work order and automated documentation systems.
  • Participate and lead design-for-manufacturability (DFM)/design-for-cost (DFC) reviews and sign off for design release
  • Architect, design, and validate a holistic manufacturing operations management system down to the shopfloor workflows to enable both efficient and effective manufacturing execution and quality standard compliance
  • Prepare reports and data analysis documenting key performance indicators such as OEE, capacity planning/utilization, throughput, OTD, and FPY and communicate issues effectively with builders, technicians, and managers.
  • Effectively manage and track to closure non-conformances, test anomalies, defects, and bugs; Debug, root-cause, and make continuous improvements of control systems in a high-rate production environment

Export Control : This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. Citizen in order to comply with U.S. government-imposed requirements related to the nature of the work and/or where it will be performed.

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
