JOB SUMMARY

At Doble Engineering, an Electro-Mechanical Application Engineer serves as a critical link between Sales, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing by developing accurate product cost estimates and technical solutions for customer applications. This role is responsible for analyzing customer requirements, evaluating engineering specifications, estimating labor and material costs, and determining the overall cost of goods (COGs) for both standard and custom-engineered products.
In addition to providing accurate quotations and pricing recommendations, the Electro-Mechanical Application Engineer supports product development initiatives, drives continuous improvement efforts, evaluates manufacturing efficiencies, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to improve product performance, quality, and profitability. The ideal candidate combines strong technical aptitude, analytical problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of electro-mechanical systems and manufacturing processes. This position will report to Director of Operations, and is located at Doble's Accident, Maryland facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Cost Estimating and Quotation Support
- Review customer specifications, requests for quotation (RFQs), statements of work, and technical requirements to ensure complete understanding of project scope.
- Evaluate engineering drawings, bills of material (BOMs), schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation to prepare accurate cost estimates.
- Calculate required material quantities, fabrication requirements, assembly labor hours, testing hours, and acceptance testing hours necessary to complete customer orders.
- Analyze direct labor, material costs, purchased components, subcontracted services, and manufacturing overhead to determine total cost of goods sold.
- Obtain and validate current pricing from suppliers, vendors, and subcontract manufacturers to ensure estimate accuracy.
- Develop pricing recommendations and sales quotations through application of appropriate margin targets and business objectives.
- Reprice standard and repeat products based on updated labor rates, material pricing, and market conditions.
- Monitor commodity pricing trends, supplier cost changes, and economic factors that may impact product costs.
- Ensure quotations comply with customer specifications while meeting company profitability objectives.
Technical and Application Engineering Support
- Collaborate with customers, sales personnel, and engineering teams to develop technical solutions that meet application requirements.
- Analyze and interpret electrical and mechanical specifications to determine appropriate product configurations and system designs.
- Evaluate product options, engineering changes, and custom modifications to assess technical feasibility and cost implications.
- Support product development activities by identifying design opportunities that improve performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Provide technical guidance during proposal development and project planning phases.
- Assist in developing and maintaining product specifications, technical documentation, and application guidelines.
Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement
- Partner with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, and Supply Chain teams to identify opportunities for cost reduction and increased operational efficiency.
- Evaluate manufacturing processes, labor utilization, and material consumption to improve estimating accuracy and reduce waste.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on lowering cost of goods sold and improving profitability.
- Review historical job performance data and completed project costs to validate and refine future estimates.
- Identify opportunities to standardize products, processes, and components to improve efficiency and reduce overall costs.
Risk Analysis and Project Evaluation
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative risk assessments on proposed projects and custom-engineered solutions.
- Identify technical, commercial, operational, and supply chain risks that may impact project success.
- Communicate project risks, assumptions, and cost drivers to stakeholders and management.
- Ensure estimates appropriately account for project complexity, schedule constraints, and technical challenges.
Data Management and Process Development
- Develop, maintain, and improve estimating tools, cost models, databases, and reporting systems.
- Create and maintain standardized estimating procedures to improve consistency and accuracy.
- Utilize ERP, PLM, CRM, and business management systems to manage project data and support quoting activities.
- Generate reports and presentations to support management reviews, sales activities, and operational planning.
Additional Responsibilities
- Work closely with production and operations teams to identify and implement opportunities to lower manufacturing costs.
- Develop sales support tools, pricing calculators, technical reference materials, and training aids.
- Assist with internal strategic initiatives, process improvement projects, and cross-functional business programs.
- Support new product introduction efforts by evaluating production costs and manufacturing readiness.
- Participate in customer visits, internal meetings, and technical reviews as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Electrical Engineering (BSEE), or related engineering discipline.
Alternative Qualification
- Equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year engineering degree.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of three (3) years of engineering, application engineering, manufacturing engineering, estimating, or related technical experience.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, bills of material, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE (Not Required):
- Experience with cost estimating, technical quotations, or product pricing.
- Experience in electro-mechanical manufacturing environments.
- Experience supporting custom-engineered products or engineered-to-order systems.
- Experience with ERP, PLM, and CRM platforms.
- Experience with high-power electrical test equipment or similar industrial systems.

- Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems for evaluating product costs, bill of materials, and manufacturing data.
- Experience with data analysis, automation, coding, artificial intelligence tools, or scripting platforms is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with estimating software, cost modeling tools, and engineering databases preferred.

Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job related skills, as well as relevant education or training experience.
Salary Pay Range Minimum $81,650.18 - Midpoint $102,062.72
