Position Summary

Augusta School District is seeking an Elementary Cross-Categorical Special Education Teacher to serve students at Augusta Elementary School. Augusta Elementary serves students in 4K-5th grade with an enrollment of approximately 220 students. The student population is approximately 43% economically disadvantaged, and 22% of students are identified as students with disabilities.

The Elementary Cross-Categorical Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specially designed instruction to students with disabilities based on their IEP goals, disability-related needs, and access to the general education curriculum. This position requires strong collaboration with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, families, related service providers, and the special education department to support student growth academically, behaviorally, socially, and functionally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Elementary Cross-Categorical Special Education Teacher will:

  • Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in alignment with IEP goals, disability-related needs, and grade-level expectations.
  • Support students in core academic areas, including reading, writing, math, and other content areas as appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs in compliance with state and federal special education requirements.
  • Conduct annual IEP meetings and other IEP team meetings as needed.
  • Complete state-compliant special education paperwork, including IEPs, progress reports, evaluation reports, and required documentation.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and use data to adjust instruction and support.
  • Collaborate with general education staff to support accommodations, modifications, behavior supports, and inclusive practices.
  • Assist general education teachers in understanding student needs and implementing appropriate supports within the classroom.
  • Plan for and provide direction to paraprofessionals supporting students with disabilities.
  • Work collaboratively within the special education department to support building-wide programming, compliance, scheduling, and student needs.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with families regarding student progress, concerns, and support.
  • Support students with a variety of disability-related needs, which may include academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, adaptive, or executive functioning needs.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduling to meet student needs across grade levels and service settings.
  • Participate in problem-solving, intervention planning, and team meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the position.

  • Commitment to inclusive practices and helping students access the general education curriculum.

Qualifications

  • Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction license in Cross-Categorical Special Education
  • Experience working with elementary students is preferred.
  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs preferred.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin special education procedures and compliance requirements preferred.

Work Environment

This position is based at Augusta Elementary School and includes working with students in a variety of settings, including special education environments, general education classrooms, small groups, and individual instructional settings. The teacher must be flexible and responsive to student needs, building schedules, and special education programming requirements.
