Position Details

SUMMARY:

An elementary instructional coach is an educational professional who supports teachers in enhancing their instructional practices to improve student learning outcomes. They work collaboratively with teachers, providing guidance, resources, areas for improvement, and constructive feedback on effective teaching strategies, small group instruction, curriculum implementation, the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology, and classroom management. Their role involves observing classroom instruction, modeling lessons and effective teaching techniques, and facilitating professional development sessions. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, elementary instructional coaches help create a positive and productive learning environment for both teachers and students. Their ultimate goal is to ensure that all students receive high-quality education that meets their diverse needs. Ideal candidates are experienced educators with strong communication skills and a commitment to continuous professional growth.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• Possession of a Bachelor's or higher degree.
• Valid Michigan teacher's certificate required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience required
• Experience working with adult learners, coaching teachers, and delivering professional development.
• Experience leading other teachers to achieve strong academic results
• Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily with minority and low income students
• Significant experience with curriculum development and daily lesson planning
• Experience in analyzing data and using results to modify instructional practices
• Demonstrate a reflective, humble, and eager approach to improving their instructional practice and embedding that outlook in their coaching practice
• Model positive and healthy character traits and habits, such as being organized, consistent and understanding
• Multi-faceted, multi-skilled, resourceful, and willing to do whatever it takes to help our students reach a level of academic excellence
• Be knowledgeable and passionate about adult learning theories as well as working with adults to ensure that they are becoming the best educator for the current challenges of the job
• Knowledge of the Michigan State Standards in Literacy and Mathematics, and current trends and best practices in curriculum design and instruction.
• Have knowledge of the Study of Early Literacy, Assessment Literacy, Justice Leaders, Courageous Conversations About Race, and/or other anti-racist and socially just curricula
• Training in the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy, Essential Coaching Practices
• Training in Cognitive Coaching, Coaching Cycles, Adaptive Schools, and/or Coaching for Equity
• Training in MICIP and MTSS
• Training in varied assessments for progress monitoring; e.g Acadience, Strategic Intervention Solutions assessments, IRLA/ENIL Easy CBM.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
