Highcrest Elementary School is seeking a motivated and dedicated professional to serve as our Instrumental Music Teacher to fill an opening starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The position is vital to our school as the staff member has regular and influential interaction with all students, staff and parents/families. This Instrumental Music Teacher will teach small group instrumental lessons (Grades 4-6), as well as conduct our full band and full orchestra (Grades 5-6).

Compensation: $57,847-$114,618 (full-time annual)

The Instrumental Music Teacher will teach small group instrumental lessons to Grades 4-6, and will conduct the full band and full orchestra for grades 5-6. The Instrumental Music Teacher will also collaborate with other staff members to organize and direct school-wide events such as music concerts, the school talent show, school-wide assemblies, special school-wide events, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide Grade 4-6 small group instrumental lessons;
  • Lead and conduct Grade 5-6 full band and full orchestra;
  • Teach the foundations and fundamental principles of music focused on music theory, basic notation, rhythm, meter, musical understanding, harmony, exploration, pitch, duration, timbre, texture and choral music through engaging and developmentally appropriate lesson plans and learning activities in accordance with the National and Connecticut State Standards, the Wethersfield Public Schools Music Curriculum, and Charlotte Danielson's The Framework for Teaching: Evaluation Instrument;
  • Plan and implement music lesson plans;
  • Teach and explore various genres of musical expression and the significance of each, as well as the significance of music throughout history;
  • Select and utilize appropriate music, books and instructional resources to enhance learning;
  • Provide individual and small group musical instruction;
  • Provide students the freedom to explore and express themselves musically;
  • Maintain and care for any school-owned musical property (instruments and equipment);
  • Plan for and coordinate musical programs for school assemblies, open house, seasonal programs, and concerts;
  • Plan for and conduct an annual Winter Concert in December (Grades 5-6);
  • Plan and conduct an annual spring choral and instrumental concert in the Spring;
  • Plan and coordinate the music/sound aspects of the monthly Town Hall Meetings;
  • Plan and conduct an annual Spring Concert in the Spring (Grades 4-6);
  • Plan and coordinate the music/sound/tech aspects of school-wide assemblies;
  • Regularly communicate with parents and school staff regarding individual student progress;
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree;
  • Appropriate CT Certification credentials (049 certification);
  • Extensive primary and elementary song repertoire;
  • Exemplary communication skills to be used when 1) teaching, performing and meeting with students, parents, families, and staff, 2) writing formal and informal letters, messages, plans and comments, and 3) collaborating with students, parents, families and staff to organize and implement all school-wide music performances and various assemblies;
  • Proven musicianship skills in instrumental music;
  • Ability to choose age-appropriate repertoire and knowledge of appropriate music technology;
  • Ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities and work independently and with a sense of urgency;
  • Excellent classroom management skills with both small and large groups;
  • Ability to handle and treat information confidentially.
