    Snohomish School District No. 201 Snohomish, Washington Job Description Job Title: Teacher, Music Division: Schools Department: Elementary Immediate Supervisor Job Title: Principal Next Higher Supervisor Job Title: Superintendent General Description: Under the direction of the Principal, responsible for developing in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; teaching techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; discovering and developing talents of students in the field of music; and developing knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

    1. Performance Responsibilities

      • Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to students.
      • Utilizes appropriate learning activities to implement district adopted music curricula and other basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative procedures of the school district
      • Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time
      • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student
      • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students
      • Controls the storage and use of school-owned property, makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required
      • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals and musical performances
      • Evaluates each student's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group
      • Plans, rehearses and directs students in musical programs for school and community
      • Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records
      • Communicates with parents and classroom teachers on student progress
      • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve, attitude and learning problems
      • Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies and civic functions
      • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned
      • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
      • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities
      • Maintains professional competence through inservice education provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music
      • Assists the administration in implementing all district policies and procedures as well as building guidelines governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior; maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
      • Demonstrates sensitivity in dealing with students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, cognitive and physical abilities as well as with students of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds

      • Qualifications a. Education and Experience

        • Valid teaching certificate for the State of Washington with appropriate endorsement
        • HIV/AIDS training b. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

        • Ability to develop and maintain effective classroom management
