Elementary School Social Worker

Job Objective:

Provide services to children who, because of their behavior, attitudes and/or circumstances, are in need of specialized attention in order to take full advantage of the educational opportunities present. The social worker's objective is to participate in the planning of the child's educational experience as it relates to his/her social and emotional development. The school social worker services special education needs children, as well as those children whose needs can best be met by modifications within the regular education program.

Essential Job Functions:

• Advocate for, nurture and sustain a school culture conducive to learning for all students.
• Understand mental health issues affecting school age children and teens and how it may impact their educational success.
• Understand and actively engage in and/or lead building multi-tiered system of support for academics and behavior.
• Provide individual sessions to students in order to facilitate problem-solving and decision making skills, as well as promoting a healthy self-image.
• Collaborate with families and community members responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilize school and community resources.
• Responsible for timely and accurate reports (for Special Edu. IEP & 504 plans). Will work with families on developmental histories and will write and case manage 504 plans.
• Participate in the processing of referrals and the collection of data that has significance with regard to student needs.
• Communicate and interact effectively with staff and families regarding student needs (academic, social, and emotional).
• Represents and advocates for the individual needs of students both in our schools and with community agencies.
• Experience and training with Crisis and Trauma Response
• Experience with Multi-tiered Systems of Support and interventions
• Experience working with Social Emotional-Mental Health Services
• Adhere to the professional code of ethics including student/family confidentiality.
• Develop and participate in professional development programs for school staff regarding mental health.
• Work proactively with families on attendance in an effort to avoid truancy

Required experience and training: Wisconsin DPI Certification #7050 (School Social Worker) Grades K-12

Desired experience: Previous experience in School Social Work

• A broad knowledge of social work services available resources
• Ability to provide leadership, confidentiality, and communicate well with others
• Able to cultivate positive relationships with students, parents, staff and other administrators internally and with outside agency and community resources externally
