Elementary Special Education Coordinator position works in two elementary schools. DESE licensure as a Special Education Administrator is required.

JOB GOAL: To effectively supervise, serve as liaison for, and insure compliance with the special education process

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

EVALUATION AND PLACEMENT

  1. Oversee the monitoring, implementation, and compliance of required special education procedures per state and federal regulations.
  2. Ensure that special education programs, including location and class size, and related procedures comply with Special Education Regulations.
  3. Oversee and facilitate special education instructional and student activities such as state testing, inclusive teaching practices, transition programming and preparation.
  4. Assist in the transition of district special education students to/from hospitals, Department of Children and Families facilities, Department of Youth Services and other educational institutions.

SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP

  1. Provide supervision, consultation, coordination and oversight to personnel assigned to the Special Education Department.
  2. Assist Principal and Director of Pupil Personnel Services in the supervision of, and contribute to the evaluation of, special education teachers. Complete observations as assigned and in accordance with teacher contracts.
  3. With building and central office administration, plan and implement programs for staff development and in-service training for special and regular education staff.
  4. With building and central office administration, advise on, plan and implement new programs for children with disabilities

REPORTS/MANDATES:

  1. Ensure department and student records are maintained and kept current.
  2. Ensure, monitor and report on compliance as requested by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
  3. Ensure that all legal timelines are followed.
  4. Review/proof all IEPs and related documents for legal/educational soundness.
  5. Ensure all proper paperwork is in place prior to Team meeting and oversee all paperwork required post Team meeting to be sure it arrives, on time, in Pupil Personnel Services Office.
  6. Schedule and chair Team meetings for all annual reviews, initial evaluations, reevaluations, and reconvenings of the Team in conjunction with all contact persons.

LIAISON:

  1. Participate as a member of Instructional Support Teams, when appropriate.
  2. Collaborate with building principal to ensure procedural rights of students and parents are implemented. Collaborate on all needs related to students with special needs.
  3. Serve as liaison and consultant to parents, special education staff, regular education staff, ELE staff, building administration, central office administration, community agencies, educational collaborative, and related service staff.

RECRUITMENT:

  1. Assist in the recruitment, interviewing and recommendation of personnel for the special education programs as requested by administration.

OTHER:

  1. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the Director of Pupil Personnel Services may assign.
  2. Attend monthly SEPAC Meetings
