JOB TITLE: Elementary Special Education Teacher Program for Students with Cognitive Impairments

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

EVALUATION: Annual Evaluation by Principal

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate K-12
  • Certification in Special Education with CI (SA) Endorsement
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to listen and to give directions and instructions
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Outstanding communication skills - verbal and written
  • A strong commitment to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, as demonstrated by experience with co-teaching or other collaborative delivery models
  • Demonstrate ability to implement research-based instructional strategies for math, reading and writing to address academic and developmental needs of students
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in a variety of flexible positive behavior support intervention strategies
  • Proficiency integrating technology into instruction as a tool for student learning
  • Knowledge and ability to implement data collection techniques for monitoring student growth
  • Understanding of universal supports, accommodations and modifications to general education curriculum
  • Demonstrate ability to independently and accurately implement the requirements of IDEA and Michigan's Special Education Rules on behalf of caseload students

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assesses students' achievement and develops instructional strategies to meet individual educational needs of students in the assigned area of responsibility
  • Implements developmentally appropriate curriculum and strategies for students assigned to the classroom
  • Develop, evaluate, coordinate, conduct, and implement REED, MET and IEPs for caseload students collaboratively with IEP team, including parents.
  • Maintain classroom lesson plans and student records for attendance, performance and progress with clear objectives
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and supportive educational environment
  • Provide instruction that is in alignment with Michigan State Standards (Common Core or Essential Elements).
  • Collaborate and communicate with general education teachers, other special education team members, administrators and parents to meet the needs of students for a safe and organized educational environment to optimize student learning
  • Active participant in staff meetings, committees, professional development, school and district wide events as required for the position
  • Exhibit a positive demeanor and support a positive work environment.
  • Integrate technology effectively in a variety of forms on a daily basis as appropriate
  • Maintain consistent attendance and report to work on time as expected
  • Complete assigned tasks, reports, and other requirements on time
  • Other duties as assigned by administration

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk over extended periods of time
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time in a work day, and to sit/stand several times in short periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy items.
