JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching non-credit English Language and Literacy (ELL) courses to students enrolled in Kirkwoods Adult Education and Literacy Programs. Instruction will take online via Zoom. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ELL courses to Kirkwood-related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday for two hours each day. The session dates for this program year are:

Session 1: July 8 - September 10, 2026

Session 2: September 28 - December 10, 2026

Session 3: January 11 - March 11, 2027

Session 4: March 29 - June 3, 2027

The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours, with limited extra hours available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development. While previous teaching experience (any subject, but literacy, language, or ELL preferred) is encouraged, there is no licensing requirement.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist students with coursework in a variety of formats including individualized instruction, computer assisted instruction, large group courses, and other methods.
• Collaborate with fellow learning center instructors on curriculum development, student intake/advising, and staff development activities.
• Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students.
• Perform other related work duties as assigned.
• Provide contextualized, scaffolder, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ELL college and career readiness and CASAS ELL standards.
• Track attendance daily and submit reports.
• Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.
• Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing. The position involves occasional (10-33%) driving to events and meetings away from KCC's main campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution or will receive one by September 14.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

• Prior experience teaching adult ELL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrants
• Prior experience teaching ELL or foreign language at any age
• Bachelor's or master's degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related field
• TESOL training/certification preferred, such as K-12 certification in ELL, bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL, TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council pre-service training courses for adult ELL educators (http://online.themlc.org/).
