Description/Job Summary

The English Language Services (ELS) Instructional Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining high-quality ESL curriculum, delivering instruction for both academic and community-based ESOL courses, and supporting adjunct faculty in instructional best practices. This position provides guidance to current and prospective students, collaborates with community and workforce partners, and ensures that all instructional programs align with equity, accessibility, and compliance standards. The Instructional Specialist reports to the Director and plays a key role in advancing program quality, curriculum innovation, and student success within English Language Services.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Develop, review, and revise ELS curriculum to ensure alignment with program goals and learner needs
  • Design contextualized, workplace-based ESL curriculum in fields such as healthcare, information technology, and construction
  • Develop online and hybrid ESOL courses using the institution's learning management system (Canvas)
  • Contribute to program assessment, outcomes measurement, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide direct instruction in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and ESOL courses in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats
  • Participate in adjunct faculty interview panels and selection processes
  • Observe, mentor, and provide feedback to adjunct faculty to support instructional quality
  • Facilitate professional development and share best practices in English language instruction
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on ESL curriculum, instruction, and pedagogy for faculty and staff
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external community partners to support student success and program alignment
  • Ensure compliance with equity, accessibility, and grant-funded program requirements, including Maryland Department of Labor (MD DOL) initiatives
  • Participate in required training and professional learning opportunities and disseminate relevant information to colleagues

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field

Experience

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience providing English language instruction to adult learners with varied proficiency levels which must include the following:
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience developing curriculum for multiple modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, asynchronous), including use of Canvas or a similar LMS
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience observing, mentoring, and providing feedback to instructors
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
