Position: Embedded Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor

Position Summary:
The Embedded Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) provides comprehensive, culturally responsive mental health services to law students through an integrated, on-site counseling model within the law school. This position delivers direct clinical care, prevention-based psychoeducation, and consultation to support student well-being, academic persistence, and professional development.
The counselor serves as a visible and accessible mental health resource within the law school community, addressing the unique psychological, academic, and professional stressors associated with legal education, including trauma exposure, vicarious trauma, and high-performance expectations. The role also includes coordination with University and community providers and supervision of graduate trainees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Services
- Provide individual counseling and brief therapy services to law students throughout program including the Bar Exam.
- Conduct intake assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Deliver crisis intervention and risk assessment.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation.
- Facilitate group counseling or skills-based groups.
Outreach, Training, and Psychoeducation
- Develop and present workshops on trauma-informed care, vicarious trauma, self-care, and working with victims of crime.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate wellness education into the law school environment.
- Promote preventative mental health programming and reduce stigma.
Consultation and Collaboration
- Consult with faculty and staff on student mental health concerns.
- Collaborate with university and community partners.
- Provide guidance on trauma-informed practices.
Case Management and Referral Coordination
- Coordinate referrals for psychiatric evaluation and medication services.
- Assist with academic accommodations and support services.
- Serve as liaison to campus and community providers.
Supervision and Program Development
- Supervise graduate interns and practicum students.
- Support program development and evaluation efforts.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with licensing and ethical standards.
- Participate in meetings and professional development.
- Manage caseload and scheduling effectively.
Education/Experience:
- Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or equivalent field required
- Licensed by appropriate North Carolina mental health licensure board (e.g., NC Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, NC Social Work Board, etc.) preferred
- Experience in individual and/or group counseling.
- Training in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention.
- Clinical license-eligible candidates will be considered for hire, but continued employment will be contingent upon licensure within 18 months (subject to negotiation) of hire
- General trauma treatment certification preferred
- Trauma treatment specialist-eligible candidates will be considered for hire, but continued employment will be contingent upon completion of training within 18 months (subject to negotiation) of hire
- Minimum 5 years of full-time experience providing psychotherapy for general mental health concerns, preferably with young adult population preferred or minimum 3 years of full-time experience providing trauma treatment counseling, preferably with young adult population preferred
- Experience with co-occurring mental health/trauma survivor population required
- Experience utilizing evidenced-based interventions for the treatment of mental health concerns required
- Extensive experience providing crisis intervention desired
- Supervisory experience desired
- Experience working in a higher education or non-profit sector desired
- Experience with mandated client populations desired
- Experience working with substance use concerns desired
- Demonstrated competence in group counseling as well as time-limited individual psychotherapy desired
- Demonstrated competence in outreach and prevention program planning and implementation desired
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels
- Well-developed presentation and public speaking capabilities
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize personal and departmental workflow
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
- Strong computer skills and technologically savvy in the areas of electronic medical records, digital communication and social media
- Ability to work effectively with young adults
- Ability to make quick and accurate clinical assessments
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within a changing environment
- Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team, and within a diverse group of people.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet set deadlines as necessary
