• How do you do memory cleansing OR platforms with significant constraints on memory size, is it more preferable to allocate memory statically or dynamically?
• Can you explain the recent embedded projects you have worked on? What was your role and how did you accomplish the product?
• Have you done platform level Development? Do you like low level development at the Device, IO level?
• Since 32-bit and 64-bit microcontrollers exist, why are 8-bit ones still in use?
• What RTOS tools have you worked with? Explain how you have worked with RTOS professionally.
• Describe the pros and cons of using a generic real-time operating system (RTOS) on a mid-range microcontroller.

• The teams are currently focused on Rockwell's Software Defined Automation (SDA) initiative
• Previous Input/Output (IO) product roadmap work has been completed and released

• Current work is centered around building feature sets for Rockwell's next-generation automation platform
• The goal is to create controller functionality that can operate across multiple hardware platforms rather than requiring customers to purchase specific PLC hardware

• The engineers are responsible for the lowest levels of the software stack, including:
  • Drivers
  • RTOS functionality
  • Memory management
  • Platform-level software
  • Hardware abstraction
  • Embedded controller functionality
• These engineers are the bridge between software and hardware, creating the code that ultimately runs on Rockwell automation hardware and controllers.
• Rockwell's automation products serve customers across Manufacturing, Food & Beverage, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, etc.
  • Note: This team does not handle robotics motion-control development.

• The teams runs in Agile - Safe framework
• Two-week sprints
• Regular ceremonies include daily standups, sprint planning, retrospectives every two weeks

• Backfill - replacing an employee who was exited from the organization

• The previous individual struggled with the embedded portion of the role
• Relied heavily on AI-generated code rather than demonstrating true embedded expertise
• Was unable to independently execute assigned work at the expected level

• Team 1: 8 Engineers (current opening)
• Team 2: 7 Engineers
• Team 3: 7 Engineers

• Each team currently has approximately 2 contractors embedded within it
• Contractors work directly alongside FTE employees

• Hardware Engineering is a separate organization
• No dedicated testing team
• Two Scrum Masters currently support all three teams
• Third Scrum Master is being hired

• Design and develop embedded software
• Develop platform-level functionality
• Work directly with hardware
• Participate in architectural and design discussions
• Write unit tests and test own code
• Participate in Agile ceremonies
• 100% new development - this is not maintenance work

• SDA roadmap consists of several years of planned new product development

• Engineers are expected to contribute to design decisions

• Deep RTOS expertise required
• QNX RTOS is their current environment

• Experience developing software on:
  • ARM platforms
  • Client/x86 platforms

• Primary language used by the team
• Candidate should be highly proficient in modern C++

• Need to enjoy low-level engineering work
• Have experience close to hardware
• Be interested in platform development

• Will include embedded engineering questions, design question and technical evaluation led primarily by Team Lead, end with behavioral portion to assess collaboration, teamwork, communication
