Job Description Summary

The Emergency Communications Call Taker is an empathetic, resilient, highly trained professional with a passion for public service, a high degree of emotional control, and the desire to work in fast paced environment. Emergency Communications Call Takers answer and process 911 and non-emergency calls and serve as the vital link between the citizens and first responder in Weld County.

Job Description

Call Processing - 95%

  • Answer and prioritize incoming 911 calls and administrative lines.
  • Process calls using Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) enabled and Text to 911 enabled equipment.
  • Create calls for service by collecting essential information and recording it in the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Process calls for service using Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), and Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD).
  • Identify and update existing calls for service.
  • Identify and route calls outside our jurisdiction to the proper authority.
  • Run limited queries in the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC)/National Crime information Center (NCIC) databases.
  • Direct callers to the proper resource when their needs are outside the scope of emergency services.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, races, and beliefs.
  • Remain calm during high stress, life-safety situations and calm others who are in a heightened emotional state.
  • Adhere to strict guidelines on confidentiality and system usage.

Other - 5%

  • Conduct call taking training for new hires.
  • Follow WCRCC policies and procedures and Weld County Code.
  • Maintain availability to work all shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays) with hours and days off subject to change, sometimes on short notice.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma/GED

Experience Qualifications

  • 2 years Customer Service Experience

Preferred Experience

  • 1 year Previous experience working in a public safety emergency communications center

Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum typing speed of at least 40 words per minute. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to write clearly and spell correctly. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to communicate effectively through clear speech and hearing (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to maintain composure under extreme circumstances (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to think clearly, quickly assess and evaluate situations, organize thoughts, and respond quickly to life-safety events. (High proficiency)
  • Excellent attention to detail (High proficiency)
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CCIC/NCIC Certification within 30 Days Required
  • AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED certification within 30 Days Required
  • EMD/EFD/EPD IAED Certification within 90 Days Required
  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.

Testing may be required for applicants who are selected to move forward in the hiring process.

This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
