During those 3 years, you will be required to take 3 specific college courses to obtain an Initial certification: College Coursework - Human Development and Learning College Coursework - Teaching Students with Disabilities & Special Health-Care Needs College Coursework - Curriculum and Instruction An Initial certificate is valid for 5 years. During the next 5 years, you will be required to take 3 more specific college courses to obtain Professional certification: College Coursework - Instruction and/or Assessment College Coursework - Teaching Literacy Skills Methods - 3 S.H.
