EMERGENCY Medicine APP – Full Time NP/PA - Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Clinical Decision Unit

Our emergency department is the premier level 1Trauma Center emergency department in the region and a national leader in clinical care, education, and research.  Our department, featuring a new state-of-the-art facility, serves as a high-volume, high-acuity level I trauma center, burn center, stroke center, and STEMI center. With an annual volume exceeding 110,000 patient visits (combination of adult and pediatric), we address the full spectrum of human illness and injury.

Position Overview:

  • Our APP team is exceptional, well-respected, and fully integrated into all aspects of care delivery. 
  • The Clinical Decision Unit provides care for adult patients who need additional evaluation to determine whether a longer hospital admission is necessary.  Position will help provide full overnight coverage of the CDU.
  • Participates in team focused patient care by means of patient examinations augmented by diagnostic and therapeutic evaluations/ interventions in the medical and/or surgical theatres of health care. The clinician functions under the regulatory mandate from their respective licensing organization (North Carolina Medical Board or North Carolina Board of Nursing) with departmental specific credentialing from the institution.
  • Under physician supervision, perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in diagnosing emergency medical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and service for quality patient care; record data and tentative conclusions for review by physician.
  • Carry out complex patient care services under indirect physician supervision using advanced medical knowledge; monitor progress of patients, maintain a record of the patient's progress, and consult with supervising physician when patient's progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.

Schedule Details:

The ED CDU and managed 24/7 by that APP team supervised by the ED attendings

Hours per Week: minimum of 36 patient facing hours.

Care setting (inpatient): Full Time  - APP call coverage as needed.

Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Current North Carolina Medical Board Medical License, Certified by NCCPA
  • 1 Year of PA experience.
  • Current American Heart Association or Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) is required to start.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registration, for prescription writing is required to start.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Requirements:

  • Graduation from accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's Program, Master's degree or higher required.
  • Current North Carolina Board of Nursing Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Board certified as a Nurse Practitioner by AANP or ANCC.
  • 1 Year of ENP or AGACNP experience.
  • Current American Heart Association or Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) is required to start.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registration, for prescription writing is required to start.

Work as part of an Emergency Medicine team to improve outcomes for patients in a dynamic Emergency Department.  In this role as an Emergency Medicine APP, you will work alongside EM Physicians, other EM APPs, and EM nurses and staff. Though APPs in this role will collaborate with and share all patients with physicians, autonomy is both encouraged and fostered. Our EM APPs will learn to manage acute and chronic conditions with increasing independent expertise and are encouraged to practice at the top of their license. Although the focus of this role is primarily clinical, there will be Career Development opportunities with access to get involved in Education, Administration and Leadership.
