Overview:

Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

Performs limited patient care duties under the supervision of staff nurse. Maintains an environment conducive to the patient’s well being.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Current CA EMT Certification with recent ambulance or hospital experience.
  • Current BLS Provider

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year experience in a related emergency medical field or acute hospital setting
  • 12 lead EKG class

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Position involves standing and walking for long periods of time, approximately 75% of the workday.
  • Must be able to transfer and lift patients as necessary. Weight will vary from patient to patient.
  • Must have the dexterity, coordination, and visual and auditory acuity to perform all job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be free from signs of illness and infections.

 

Technical and Job Specific Skill:

 

1. Telephone Skills: Must demonstrate hospital telephone etiquette by answering the phones promptly, courteously and by identifying department and self.

 

2. Policy/Procedures: Is aware of and follows all hospital and department policies and procedures.

 

3. Teamwork: Promotes positive co-worker relationships through teamwork and cooperation. Understands and supports the needs of individuals in other departments and promotes conflict resolution. Shares information, work knowledge and experience with co-workers, physicians, and students in a non-threatening manner. Offers assistance and promptly responds to requests.

 

4. Productivity: Maintains high productivity and performs efficiently regardless of whether the work volume is high or low. Appropriately prioritizes work activities. Responds to difficult situations with self-control and a positive attitude. Makes decisions independently and knows when to ask for assistance. Exercises good judgment and arrives at sound decisions.

 

5. Basic Patient Care -

 

a) Based on certification & training and according to hospital policy & procedure, provides efficient basic patient care including, but not limited to, assisting with nutritional needs, activities of daily living, crutch walking, comfort measures, and treatment.

b) Measures vital signs, reports findings to staff nurse.

c) Transports non-critical patients and assists RN in transporting critical patients to assigned bed.

d) Applies telemetry leads, performs 12 lead EKG.

e) Documents treatment given on medical record.

f) Renders post-mortem care.

g) Performs visual acuity and prepares patient for eye exam.

h) Prepares patient for discharge, admission, transfer to another facility, surgery, treatments and/or diagnostic procedures, as directed

i) Keeps work area clean and well stocked. Prepares patient care area for next admission upon discharge of present patient.

j) Assists ED physician, private physician and RN in emergency situations.

k) Performs simple tasks as directed by RN Team Leader and/or Charge Nurse. Functions within scope of practice of unlicensed personnel.

l) Places reports on patient record, notifies MD and/or team leader of abnormal results.

m) Meets care needs for patient and family, including age specific requirements, cultural and religious needs.

 

6. Leadership –

 

a) Attends 50 % of staff meetings. Has knowledge of unit goals.

b) Knowledgeable of Process Improvement (PI) methodology for the facility.

c) Aware of meetings/committees outside of assigned unit.

d) Implements hospital policies & procedures. Refers to P&P manuals or consults senior staff when unfamiliar situation occurs.

e) Assists in orientation of new EDTs and acts as a resource person for EMT students.

 

7. Professional Growth -

 

a) Demonstrates responsibility for self-development by participating in learning activities to obtain skills to meet gaps as identified in collaboration with the supervisor. Identifies own learning needs.

b) Shows responsibility in obtaining basic skills needed for unit of practice.

c) Demonstrates positive image while practicing on the unit.

d) Meets minimum scheduling requirements.

e) Attends all mandatory courses as designated by the hospital.

 

8. Patient Rights -

 

a) Explains and confirms understanding of patient rights.

b) Treats all patients, families and co-workers in a polite and respectful manner.

c) Encourages participation in decision making.

d) Upholds patient rights.

e) Encourages therapeutic communication with patient and family.

 

9. Performs any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.
