Description

The Employee Safety Intern supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of workplace safety programs within a local government organization. Work involves assisting safety staff with research, training, inspections, data collection, and compliance efforts to promote a safe and healthy work environment for employees and the public. The intern will gain hands-on experience in occupational safety practices and regulatory requirements in the public sector. Assignments are performed under close supervision and are designed to provide exposure to workplace safety functions while contributing to the organization's safety goals.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist in conducting workplace safety inspections and hazard assessments.
  • Help track, analyze, and report on workplace incidents, injuries, and near-miss events.
  • Support the development of safety training materials, presentations, and toolbox talks.
  • Help update safety manuals, procedures, and compliance documentation.
  • Observe and learn about local government operations related to occupational safety.
  • Review safety plans from external contacts under the supervision of a Safety Inspector.
  • Help investigate alleged unsafe conditions and recommend required improvements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Superior organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to analyze and calculate mathematical figures and interpret government regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in documentation.
  • Demonstrated interest in workplace safety and public service.
  • Experience with data collection, report writing, or safety-related projects.
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and engage in hands-on safety activities.

Education and Experience

Current enrollment in a college or university program encompassing Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, or a related field.

Physical Requirements

Work is typically performed in an office setting, with occasional site visits to city facilities or field locations. The intern may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, construction environments, or other work settings requiring personal protective equipment (PPE).
