Description:

The College of Public Service Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work is looking for student assistants to work with its newly funded voting and civic engagement initiative, emPOWERed YOUth. Student assistants will work with Ms. Vivian Smith and Drs. Liza Barros-Lane, and Dr. Fei Yang to support various aspects of the initiative. Depending on assignment, students may work on the Court Watch Program, engage the UHD community in voting and civic activities, or develop and implement educational materials for local high school students and justice-involved youth. Some travel may be required, with funds available to assist with or cover travel expenses.

Additionally, student assistants will support faculty with initiative-related research projects, administrative tasks, and planning. The position is ideal for those wishing to gain experience in public service to inform and enrich future careers in social work, criminal justice, and education. People serving in these positions will earn 15-19.5 hours of work per week.

DUTIES:

  • Design and implement educational materials for local high school students and justice-involved youth
  • Support the Court Watch Program
  • Engage the UHD community in voting and civic activities
  • Assist with initiative-related research projects
  • Complete administrative tasks related to the initiative
  • Support planning and coordination of program activities
  • Travel to local schools, community sites, or out of state as needed (travel funds available)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Completion of all UHD online training required for employment and/or scholarship positions
  • Successful completion of all background check requirements
  • Willingness to interact with, mentor, and support adolescents and UHD students
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners
  • Reliability, professionalism, and commitment to civic engagement

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current UHD BSW student in Urban Practice 2 or above (not yet in field practice courses)
  • Must be available during the hours of 9:00a.m.-5:00 p.m. during weekdays
  • Must commit to working 15-20 hours per week during both the fall and spring semesters
