The VISTA will serve with Chenango Ambulance Services (CAS) to build organizational capacity and long-term financial viability. CAS serves a uniquely rural population where mass transit is non-existent. For low-income individuals who do not own vehicles, CAS is effectively their primary (or only) physical link to the healthcare system, even for urgent but non-emergent care. If capacity drops and CAS cannot turn wheels, these residents are completely stranded without medical care. The VISTA will build volunteer recruitment/retention systems that will further enhance this medical transportation safety net that prevents rural, low-income residents from suffering catastrophic health declines and subsequent economic ruin. Additionally, the VISTA will develop a sustainable community health education curriculum, build up social media systems, create resources, and apply for grants that will allow for building long-term organizational capacity at CAS.
