Position classification

Hybrid -- Job duties and expectations allow for onsite and remote work scheduled every week. Employees in this classification are regularly scheduled onsite one (1) to four (4) days per week based on the County needs and as determined by Department Director. What Success Looks Like In This Job

The Community and Economic Development (CED) Department serves Adams County through an integrated and equitable approach to community planning and investment. The Department partners with neighborhoods, businesses, agencies, and others to bring about positive change for Adams County. The departmental divisions include Building Safety, Planning & Development, Permits & Licensing, Environmental Programs, Housing Policy & Community Investments, Economic & Community Vitality, and an Administrative Division that provides oversight and coordination across the department.

The Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Business Coordinator is responsible for advancing Adams County's sustainability, decarbonization, and economic vitality goals through direct engagement with the business community. This role leads the development and implementation of the County's Sustainable Business Program and serves as the primary liaison to the Colorado Green Business Network (CGBN). The Coordinator works directly with local businesses to identify, implement, and measure energy efficiency and sustainability improvements, while aligning these efforts with broader County initiatives related to building decarbonization, energy policy, and climate action.

This position is highly collaborative and externally facing, requiring strong relationship management, technical expertise, and the ability to translate complex sustainability concepts into practical, cost-effective solutions for businesses.

This is a project-designated, grant-funded position supported through the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) Building Policy Collaborative program, with funding anticipated through Fall 2029.

The anticipated hiring range is $73,611.21 - $84,652.89 annually. The full salary range is $73,611.21 - $106,736.26 annually.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Builds, administers, and supports the ongoing development and improvement of the County's Sustainable Business Program, including conducting comprehensive initial assessments, supporting recertifications, performing program audits, updating program criteria, and preparing required reports.
  • Serves as the primary Adams County liaison to the Colorado Green Business Network (CGBN), maintaining regular coordination and participating in required training with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).
  • Engages businesses participating in or interested in the CGBN and develops strategic work plans to expand Adams County's roster of certified green businesses.
  • Provides technical assistance to businesses seeking to reduce environmental impacts through improvements in energy efficiency, building decarbonization, transportation, waste, water use, and sustainable business practices.
  • Conducts on-site and virtual sustainability assessments and provides customized recommendations and implementation strategies to support businesses in improving efficiency, reducing costs, and lowering environmental impacts.
  • Supports businesses in meeting CGBN certification and recertification requirements.
  • Connects businesses with available funding sources, rebates, incentives, and technical resources related to energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Tracks and analyzes metrics related to energy use, cost savings, greenhouse gas reductions, and environmental benefits over time to evaluate program effectiveness and inform decision-making.
  • Develops case studies, cost-benefit analyses, and impact summaries demonstrating the value of sustainability investments and participation in programs such as CGBN.
  • Prepares annual reports summarizing program participation, outcomes, and impacts, and assists in grant reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Promotes and markets the Sustainable Business Program and the economic and environmental value of sustainable practices through various forms of communication, including community events, workshops, newsletters, and direct outreach.
  • Serves as a liaison between businesses and Department programs to facilitate access to permitting, inspections, building policies, and incentive programs.
  • Assists with implementation of related initiatives, including strategies identified in the Xcel Energy Partners in Energy Regional Energy Action Plan and other regional or County-led efforts.
  • Collaborates with County partners, municipal partners, utilities, regional organizations, and other green business programs to ensure alignment and avoid duplication of efforts.
  • Provides input on sustainability, energy efficiency, and building decarbonization strategies based on direct engagement with the business community.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in sustainability, energy efficiency, program administration, economic development, or a related field.
  • Experience working directly with businesses, utilities, or community-based programs is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with grant-funded programs, reporting, or public-sector initiatives is a plus.

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in sustainability, environmental studies, public administration, business, engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A master's degree is preferred and may substitute 2 years' professional experience.
  • Additional professional experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain upon hire, a valid driver's license.

Background Check:

  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Other:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Experience with energy benchmarking tools, utility data analysis, or building performance metrics.
  • This position requires regular engagement with local businesses, including on-site visits within unincorporated areas of Adams County.
  • This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for County business. The employee must provide their own reliable transportation and maintain a valid driver's license and insurance. Mileage incurred for County business will be reimbursed in accordance with the Adams County Travel and Meal Expense Policy.
