The Role

The SSNX program is seeking an Engineer to join the Ao (Operational Availability) team. Ao is one of the four tenants of the SSNX program that seeks to ensure the fleet experiences less down time and shorter maintenance availabilities through improved reliability of components, improved maintainability, and improved sustainability. All engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply.

This is an opportunity to get involved at the beginning of a new submarine design and have influence over what will become the Navys premier attack submarine platform.

This position will be responsible for working collaboratively with other key stakeholders throughout the SSN(X) conceptual and design phases of the program to incorporate the Ao design principles:

  • Engage with shipyards, customers and other stakeholders to collect feedback for design incorporation.
  • Lead research and development studies to influence the future of US Navy submarines.
  • Need to be flexible with work assignments and may perform duties outside of traditional discipline work scope.
  • Be responsible for leading and mentoring other engineer in various studies.
  • Lead cross-functional teams through Ao design evaluations
  • Work with multi-discipline teams on incorporation of Ao design principles
  • Solve complex spatial integration issues while meeting system and overall ship requirements
  • Challenge design decisions to deviate from standard practice to realize lifecycle cost improvements
  • Be able to effectively communicate with both internal leadership and external customer(s).
  • Be prepared to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.
  • The position will require individuals who are able to adapt and adjust to support annual objectives.

Must Have

Bachelors Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • Extensive knowledge of US Navy submarine systems, requirements, system integration, arrangement best practices, and submarine unique considerations is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with multiple submarine platforms and other navy platforms for contrast is preferred.
  • Project management experience and/or PMP certification
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Above average skills with Excel and data analysis
  • Experience with SAP material management records
  • NAVY 3-M OARS experience
  • Corrective and preventative maintenance experience
  • Experience in increasing equipment/component life
