Mission Statement of the Office of State Fire Marshal: To uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings. This position location is TBD.

This advanced engineering role leads critical evaluations of complex facilities and infrastructure systems, ensuring mechanical and electrical components meet design standards, operational needs, and safety requirements. The Engineer 4 conducts in-depth field inspections, analyzes construction and repair needs, and develops high-level recommendations for system improvements. This position plays a key role in reviewing project feasibility, validating cost-benefit analyses, and guiding engineering planning and project execution from concept through completion. Serving as a technical authority, the Engineer 4 collaborates with construction teams, architects, and contractors to ensure quality workmanship, compliance with specifications, and successful delivery of major capital projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:

One year of licensed engineering experience; or

Five years of professional engineering experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:

A masters degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.

A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.

There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.

NOTES:

Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.

Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineers license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional-level engineering experience.

Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Louisiana Professional Engineer licenses are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Acts as consultant for the state as it relates to the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire, smoke, explosion, and panic.

  • Identifies, evaluates and determines the adequacy of the life safety systems in buildings. Life safety systems are comprised of the protection of structural systems, protection and integrity of egress systems, evaluation of mechanical, electrical, automatic fire suppression systems, fire protective signaling systems, design of smoke removal systems, and identification of unique hazards within a building.

  • Evaluates handicapped accessibility requirements as promulgated by the state legislature and the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council (LSUCCC).

  • Evaluates the Energy Codes as promulgated by the LSUCCC and/or State Legislature where applicable.

  • Consults and provides recommendations on construction projects by directing and overseeing architects, owners, contractors, state agencies, etc., and the general public in the proper design of all new and renovated work to all public and privately owned buildings so that they will comply with the state adopted laws, codes, rules and regulations.

  • Assists architects, engineers, builders and building owners in the development of alternatives to achieve an equivalent level of safety as that intended by the adopted laws, codes, rules and regulations.

  • On projects where no architect or engineer is required by law, consults and recommends to building owners alterative solutions to code requirements.

  • Reviews construction documents for general compliance with the adopted laws, rules, and codes.

  • Reviews construction documents for general compliance with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code
