The RoleServes as a Company expert in the design and analysis of fluid systems, and related components. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of fluid mechanics is required.Knowledge, Skills, and Ability: Candidates must have experience and knowledge of fluid flow analysis including steady-state and transient flow regimes for compressible and incompressible fluids. The candidate must have a working knowledge of flow through typical piping system components and the ability to determine loss coefficients for complex components through research of published information, analysis, or testing. Knowledge and capability should allow for component specific flow analysis as well as overall system assessments. They also must be capable of understanding the impact that design/modifications have on performance of ship systems.Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of the flow analysis methods provided in Crane Technical Paper Number 410, Handbook of Hydraulic Resistance (Idelchik), Internal Flow Systems (Miller), or similarly recognized guidance documents. In addition, they must have experience with Siemens Flomaster and be capable of leading the validation of software upgrades using the designated Siemens Flomaster Subject Matter Experts, as needed. Capability to perform, or ability to learn to perform, Computational Fluid Dynamics using Siemens FloEFD, Star CCM+, Autodesk CFD, Fluent, or other available software is preferred. The candidate will serve to validate and manage any in-house developed software, such as PDrop, that is available for general use within NNS. It is desirable for candidates to be familiar with test methods and equipment to develop plans for laboratory or shipboard tests. It is preferred that candidates have fluid flow experience in design, construction, repair and overhaul of ships. Candidates must be able to apply fluid flow knowledge to provide a technically sound approach for unique or complex problems. The engineer in this position will serve as the Company's representative in this subject area and must have superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to provide clear explanations to other NNS engineers, non-engineers, and our Navy Customers. They will participate in identifying and developing individuals who could serve as a successor to this position. They will act as a consultant to other engineers in resolving fluid flow issues and mentor junior engineers within the same discipline.Candidates should be capable of determining requirements and limits for piping system flow velocities, volumetric flow rates, and pressure drop using ship specifications and diagrams for shipboard systems or applying commercial standards for non-shipboard piping systems. While candidates will be assigned to a specific Engineering Program, it is expected that they will devote a significant portion of their time providing guidance and oversight for unique/complex problems across all Programs. The Fluid Flow Associate Technical Fellow has a dotted line organizational relationship with E02 and will occasionally work on projects under direction from the Chief Engineer's office.Must HaveBachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experienceMaster's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experiencePh.D. and 9 years of experienceNice to HaveProblem Solving: Candidates will apply sound technical principles and advanced knowledge to address unique or complex issues across all programs. Resolution of these issues may require development of unique analytical approaches and/or laboratory or shipboard testing.Discretion/Latitude: Virtually self-supervisory with the necessary leadership skills to coordinate the activities of multiple organizations in the resolution of complex or unique issues. Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. Work checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of superior. Plans R&D programs and recommends technological application initiatives to accomplish long-range objectives for their engineering discipline.Impact: Serves as a technical expert guiding the resolution to complex or unique problems, minimizing the impact to ship design or construction. Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into the production environment. Researches and develops advanced new applications resulting in new product/business opportunities for the company.Liaison: Serves as a Company technical authority on issues affecting the design and construction of fluid systems.
