About this Job
Our mission is to ensure the physical and operational integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes
The incumbent receives broad supervision from the Director of Engineering of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority East (SLFPA-E) and is directly supervised by the Engineer 8. This position exercises direct supervision over (1) Engineer 2 and (3) Engineering Technicians.
The incumbent of the position performs professional-level engineering duties in the planning, design, construction, and inspection of flood protection systems (including levees, floodwalls, floodgates, and other such structures) and other buildings and structures under the jurisdiction of SLFPA-E within Orleans, St. Bernard, and East Jefferson parishes. The above duties will include projects of moderate complexity and size, with construction values ranging from $250,000.00 to $5,000,000.00.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:
Two years of licensed engineering experience; or
Six years of professional engineering experience.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:
A masters degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.
There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.
NOTES:
Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineers license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.
Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Under the general direction of the Director of Engineering and direct supervision of the Engineer 8, this position performs professional-level engineering and supervisory work supporting the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of SLFPA-E's flood protection infrastructure and other agency-owned facilities throughout Orleans, St. Bernard, and East Jefferson parishes.
The position is primarily responsible for planning and coordinating required levee and flood protection system inspections, including inspections conducted in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. The incumbent identifies necessary repairs and works closely with Operations and Maintenance personnel to ensure corrective work is completed.
The role also manages engineering projects of moderate size and complexity, generally ranging in construction value from $250,000 to $5 million. Responsibilities include coordinating project planning, design, construction administration, consultant activities, project invoices, and compliance with applicable engineering and safety standards.
In addition, the position directly supervises one Engineer 2 and three Engineering Technicians. Supervisory responsibilities include assigning and reviewing work, hiring and onboarding employees, managing performance and timekeeping, and ensuring assignments are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
The incumbent must maintain a current Louisiana Professional Engineer license and be available to report for duty during hurricanes, high-water events, flooding threats, and other emergency conditions.
