Role: Engineer 

Loc: Columbus, IN  Position Overview

 

We are seeking a hands-on, technically skilled professional with experience in vehicle diagnostics, engine systems, and powertrain troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude, proven problem-solving abilities, and the capability to work independently while collaborating with engineering, technician, and customer teams to resolve complex vehicle issues.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience troubleshooting vehicle systems; heavy-duty technician or Service Advisor/Writer experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in technical diagnostics and problem resolution.
  • Strong understanding of engine systems and vehicle operations.
  • Previous experience working within a corporate or structured engineering environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical documentation.
  • Experience using engineering diagnostic tools such as Calterm for ECM software and calibration downloads (with support from the Cummins Columbus engineering team).

 

Key Responsibilities Vehicle & Powertrain Support

  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support for development powertrain systems, including hardware, software, controls, and electronic systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve vehicle-level issues across multiple subsystems.

 

Issue Investigation & Resolution

  • Follow established troubleshooting procedures and diagnostic workflows where available.
  • Apply engineering judgment to identify root causes and develop effective solutions when standard procedures do not exist.
  • Collaborate closely with technicians to investigate, test, and resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of issues, investigations, corrective actions, and outcomes.
  • Communicate troubleshooting plans, progress updates, and resolutions to engineers, technicians, and customers.

 

Engineering Tools & Validation Support

  • Utilize Calterm and other engineering tools to download ECM software, calibrations, and support diagnostic activities.
  • Support Vehicle Validation activities, including:
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Engine condition overrides and testing
  • Identification, resolution, and documentation of validation issues
  • Follow established issue-tracking and documentation processes to ensure traceability and visibility.

 

Documentation & Process Improvement

  • Maintain clear and detailed technical documentation.
  • Develop and implement new communication methods, tracking processes, or documentation practices as needed to support project objectives and operational efficiency.
