General Atomics Aeronautical Systems

Job Summary:

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

Under general supervision with limited review, this position is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for resolving a wide range of difficult engineering problems. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff and makes technical presentations as required. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter- organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may provide direction to less experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Assist in the design and development of aircraft fuel systems, including tanks, pumps, valves, lines, vents, filters, sensors, and associated hardware for unmanned aircraft.

+ Support layout of fuel system architectures (feed, transfer, vent, and refuel/defuel systems) to meet mission range, endurance, and safety requirements.

+ Perform basic analyses for fuel flow, pressure drop, pump sizing, and fuel quantity/CG (center of gravity) effects using standard engineering methods and tools.

+ Help develop and maintain fuel system schematics, P&IDs, and interface control documents, ensuring proper integration with airframe, propulsion, and avionics systems.

+ Assist in defining system and component requirements, performance margins, and safety factors in accordance with internal standards and applicable aerospace regulations and guidance.

+ Support integration of fuel systems into aircraft structures, coordinating with mechanical, structures, propulsion, flight controls, and manufacturing engineering teams.

+ Contribute to design for safety and reliability, including features for venting, surge/splash control, fuel isolation, and protection against leakage, over‑pressure, and contamination.

+ Assist with development of test plans and procedures for component, subsystem, and aircraft‑level fuel system testing (e.g., leak checks, flow tests, refuel/defuel tests, functional tests, and environmental tests).

+ Participate in execution of ground and flight test activities related to fuel systems, including test setup, data collection, and post‑test data reduction and analysis under the guidance of senior engineers.

+ Support troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis of fuel system anomalies discovered during development, integration, ground test, or flight test, and help implement corrective actions.

+ Prepare clear technical documentation such as analysis summaries, test reports, design review materials, and engineering change documentation.

+ Participate in internal and customer design reviews, safety reviews, and hazard analyses related to fuel systems (e.g., flammability, lightning protection, venting, and failure modes).

+ Follow established engineering processes, configuration management, and quality procedures, and proactively seek mentorship to grow technical skills in aircraft fuel system design and analysis.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
