The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

A successful candidate should have prior experience in the full RCOH engineering product and execution production cycle at the senior engineer or supervisor level. Strong technical background in A1B and/or A4W Carrier electrical systems and component designs is preferred. Experience with Availability Work Package (AWP) review and acceptance, scoping, estimating for in service carrier repairs and modernization is required. A successful candidate should have experience with evaluating and presenting detailed engineering alternatives to the customer and working to mutually agreeable alternative paths for component and system issues for which the primary or historical source or method is no longer an option. The ability to communicate complex ideas through technical reports, presentations, and whitepapers is required.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience

Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

This position is intended for the in-service aircraft carrier electrical engineering AOR. Candidates should be able to research, develop, design, and test electrical components, equipment, systems, and/or networks. A successful candidate in this role should expect to spend a significant amount of time on the following tasks:

  • Mentoring and training of individual contributors to improve department bench strength.
  • Write, evaluate, and review of: scopes, quality notices, white papers, vendor information requests, departure from specification,

design integration memos, design liaison action requests, trouble shooting guides, procedures, and techmanuals.

  • Regularly communicate with the NAVY, NAVSEA, NNL, and shipyard engineers and technical staff via various

platforms.

  • Support production during carrier availabilities with engineering and deck plate support, troubleshooting, technical evaluation of

inspection and test results.
